4 Quick Tips To Improve Your Resume

Stand out from the crowd!

For every one job posting, there can be over 100 candidates.  I know this number can seem overwhelming, but do not panic! Here are simple steps you can take to improve your odds of making the initial cut.

1) Tweak your resume to match the position. The days of sending the same resume for every opening are over. You don’t need to overhaul the whole thing, but matching your qualifications to the job listing can mean the difference between getting selected or being overlooked.

2) Quantify! Many people simply list their job duties and responsibilities and hope for the best. However, your resume is not just a laundry list of what you do or did at previous positions. Show the employer how you saved your company time, effort or money. For example, did you suggest a new idea that made a difference? Translate that to a percentage and add that bulleted point to your resume. Look at the two bullets below and you can quickly see which one adds more punch.

  • Handled purchasing orders for office supplies  (BORING!)
  • Implemented new system for office supply purchasing, reducing costs by 20%. (IMPRESSIVE!)

3) Read your resume out loud. Sure, it may seem silly at first. But, you can quickly tell if phrases sound awkward or don’t belong. This is a trick many professional writers use, and for good reason. It works.

4) Enlist help with proofing. You’re too close to the finished product. A second set of eyes helps. Industry terms that may be common to you, may not be to others. A friend can give you the objective input you need.

A well-crafted resume is your introduction to a potential new employer. Tiny tweaks can transform it from dull to desirable. Follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to that new job you’ve been looking for!
