Are you getting the results you want from LinkedIn? 3 Tweaks To Try!

Whether you use LinkedIn for networking, personal branding or finding a job, there are tweaks you can make to perfect that profile.

  1. Reorder sections. Did you know you can change the order of current positions, education, volunteer experience and skills and endorsements on LinkedIn? If you want to highlight a degree, job (this works on current positions only) or experience by placing it first, this is a nice feature. skillsIt’s easy! Simply click on “View Profile,” then hover right below the pencil to click and then drag and drop the job, school or experience in the order you want. To rearrange skills and endorsements, click on the pencil and then click on the lines to drag and drop in the order you want. Put the skills you want recruiters and others to see at the top. Note – this may not always match the ones you’ve received the highest number of endorsements for.

As you can see in the box here, social media received the most endorsements. But say for instance, you want to emphasize your editing skills. Simply move that skill to the top.

The benefit of doing this rearrangement is to draw attention to the skills you want connected to yourself, highlighted in the order you want them to be seen. 

2. Request Revisions to your Recommendations
Look at the current recommendations on your profile. Are they a bit dated? Did you know you can ask for a revision? This might be a good thing to do to spruce up an older recommendation or have the recommendation call out different strengths. LinkedIn makes it easy to reach out and reconnect with the person who wrote that original recommendation. To start the process,  click View Profile and scroll down to Recommendations. Click on the pencil next to “Ask to be recommended.”

You will then see the current recommendations you have. Click the Ask for Revision box.

You can then type in your message in the box (as seen above). When you do this, it never hurts to ask if they would like you to also revise a recommendation (if you’ve written one for them in the past).  Never be demanding – you want to touch base on how they are doing as well and then politely position how you want them to focus on the revised recommendation.

3) Worried you might appear too dated? You can remove the dates of your education on LinkedIn. Click on view profile and then scroll to the education section. Click on the drop down. Instead of choosing the years you started and finished your degree, just leave it at year in both the “from” and “to” boxes and click save when you’re done. This tweak can also be used in conjunction with tip number one. You could remove dates and move a desired education to appear first (even if it wasn’t the most recent). The goal is to always position your profile with the most impressive and relevant information at the top.

Jaime Howley, Corporate Recruiter

IMG_7112 2What do you do in your position?  I am a Corporate Recruiter supporting Oldcastle Precast and Light Building Products.  I manage the full recruiting cycle, from sourcing candidates through onboarding, for various hiring managers that are searching for top talent across the country.

When did you join Oldcastle? November 2017

Where is your job located? I work out of our recruiting center based in Rochester, New York.

What do you like about working here? I like that all of the different groups support each other as a team.  

What are the best parts of your job? I have been in the recruiting industry for over 12 years. I enjoy providing people an opportunity to grow within their field, find a better job, increase their income, or whatever their motivators are. It is an extremely satisfying part of my job.

What would co-workers say about you? Hopefully, they would say that I have a positive attitude and am approachable.   

What was your first job ever? I supported my friend’s mom, who was a distribution rep for publishing companies.  I helped her in her office with orders, paperwork, invoicing, etc.  

Would you like to share anything about your family?  I grew up in Spencerport with my parents and 2 older brothers.  After having the chance to live in NYC for 7 years, I came back to Webster to raise my family.  I have 3 incredible children (Taylor 14, Tommy 12, and Billy 8), and they are the coolest little people ever!  I play ice hockey and volleyball, so between their sports and social calendars and mine, we stay pretty active.

Resolve to Keep Your Career On Track

Cheers to the New Year!

Let’s start with some good news. According to the December LinkedIn Workforce Report“U.S. hiring has, on average, been 10.4% higher in 2017 than in 2016.”

If this trends continues, prepared job seekers will find greater employment opportunities. The key term here is “prepared.” You need to make a plan, have your job search tools (resume, LinkedIn profile, references, etc.) ready to go at a moment’s notice. What else can you do to tip the job search scales in your favor?

Map out a year long goal list broken down by quarters, months and weeks. Have you heard the saying “A goal without a plan is just a dream”? Take the time NOW to map out where you want to go and how you want to get there. We know, it’s not rocket science. Yet, vague, unwritten goals aren’t going to get you anywhere. Having a tangible record of where you stand and how you are going to move forward gives you momentum. It can be on a calendar, in a word document or other medium. The main point is to draft out what the plan is. The more detailed, the better. Start with the big goal and then work your way backward. For example, say the goal is to get a new job by May:
January – Week 1 – Start resume, Week 2 – Update LinkedIn Profile, Week 3 – Start researching jobs and job listings, Week 4 – Attend new networking event
February – Week 1 – Set up informational interview, Week 2 – Start being more active on LinkedIn, Week 3 – Go to local job fair, Week 4 – Prepare references list
Your tasks may vary, but the important thing is to commit to action and then follow through.

Anticipate Setbacks Life happens. You may get sick, your babysitter may cancel, you may have to do overtime at work. So many things can happen that can set you off course. When disruptions occur, you can either falter or go to Plan B. For example, if you had planned on devoting an hour to redoing your resume at night, but an ill child made that impossible, you need to reschedule it to another night or the weekend. This may mean cancelling other plans. This part of the process is not fun. However, some sacrifice is needed on your journey. The perseverance will be worth it.

Start being skill focused. Aspirations are all well and good, but at the end of the day, it’s imperative that you keep your skill set up by continually growing and learning in your field. LinkedIn recently rolled out a new feature that lets you know how you stand skill-wise when it comes to people with similar job titles. Their new monthly notification suggests relevant skills among people with your same job title. Why is this important? Well, to start, recruiters search for employees by skill.

Consider this – “Those with five or more skills on their profile are discovered up to 27x more in searches by recruiters.” Source: LinkedIn Official Blog, 12/8/17

If that doesn’t give you motivation to add more skills to your LinkedIn profile, we don’t know what does.

Not feeling up to speed on a particular skill? No problem – LinkedIn learning offers a FREE MONTH of the “most in-demand business, tech and creative skills from industry experts.” It’s a good start, and easy to do from home. You can even search and filter courses by skill level, type and time to complete (as seen below).

Pick your battles wisely
Are you looking to get a new job, lose a lot of weight, save a ton of money and travel the country in 2018? Wow – those are admirable aspirations. Just be careful to not bite off more than you can chew. It can easy to become overwhelmed and discouraged. It might be better to plan out one big goal (the job search for example) and embark on the others as secondary goals. For instance, healthy eating and moderate exercise will make you healthier and more confident during your job search, but instead of aiming to lose twenty pounds, go for ten instead. Pressuring yourself with too much, too fast, and too unrealistic is just going to backfire.
