Be a LinkedIn Rock Star!

heart-947441_640

  1. Take advantage of the new LinkedIn profile.
Your photo now appears on the left. If you used a cover photo, you may want to check if the new location for your profile picture covers anything. If so, it’s time to replace it. You’ll also see that your work history is to the right. Underneath that, you’ll see your Summary section. Pay attention to what appears ‘above the fold.” Make sure it cuts off at an appropriate point. Below that, there is space for photos and links.
  2. Watch for the ‘One-click’ apply feature
See a job you like on LinkedIn? Now you can apply instantly. The latest official blog post from LinkedIn details how easy it is: “With 1-Click Apply, you now have the option to save your basic information and resume so you can apply for a job with a single click or tap.” This feature works on both mobile and desktop.
  3. Vow to actively engage at least twice a week
You don’t have to create original content (although self publishing is easy, intuitive and recommended), but aim to like, comment and share on a consistent basis. The more you do so, the more you appear in the feed of your connections.
  4. Add media to your job description section
Have a project you’re particularly proud of? You can add photos, videos, links, and more. This is a simple way to enhance your profile, add credibility and set yourself apart from the competition.
    Media
     5) Go beyond reiterating your resume
Your profile should capture the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager. They initially skim hundreds of profiles – in some cases for as little as ten seconds or less. The competition is real and fierce! To cut through the noise, make your summary and job descriptions brief but enticing. Include accomplishments instead of duties. You want to portray at a glance how you increased efficiencies, sales or saved money. Any job duty can be transformed into a quantitative result oriented bullet.

Take some time to increase activity and spruce up your profile. Your next job depends on it!

How to Rock Your Summer Job Search

rocks

What are your plans? Boating, cookouts, concerts or day trips? By all means, take that long weekend, reflect and relax. However, if you’ve been debating about embarking upon on a job search, please don’t let the lull of the long days and warm weather sidetrack your search.

Six Success Strategies

  1. Plan time for fun AND your job search
Yes, there is room for both! You need to be realistic and schedule in job tasks right alongside your social calendar. Sure, it can be mundane. But, procrastination in this instance is not your friend.
  2. Use the lack of competition to your advantage
Many people will postpone their job search until the Summer ends. Labor Day, and the start of the school year, is considered the “New Year” on the calendar for many. However, if you wait that long, you’re just putting off the inevitable. There will be job seekers looking for work this Summer, and you should be one of them.
  3. Better weather = better moods
In general, people are more upbeat this time of year. After a long, cold Winter and rainy Spring, the warmer temperatures and sunshine leave people in better spirits. What better time to take advantage of that than now?
  4. Networking is easier
There are more outdoor events to attend and they are easier to get to. Who wants to go out after work when it’s dreary, dark and below zero? You can’t use the temperatures as an excuse. Get out there and start meeting and mingling.
  5. Your odds of reaching a recruiter, hiring manager or HR person may be better
While more people do take time off in the Summer months, schedules often lessen, giving you a better chance of making contact. Try early morning before 8 a.m. to make that call – your odds of someone picking up increase. People assume that everyone takes off for vacation, but the office still needs to be open. Someone will be there. Interviews and hiring still take place! If you can be flexible on when you can come in, call or be available around someone’s vacation schedule, that’s even better!
  6. Keep up-to-date on LinkedIn enhancements (and use them!)
Like it or not, LinkedIn is a must-have job search tool. They’re continually rolling out new features that can improve your odds of landing a job or connecting with people who can help you down the line in your career. Just this week, they rolled out “How You Match,” a checklist that, according to their official blog, will show how your education, experience, and current job “match with what a company is looking for in a potential new hire.”yourehired

Take heed of these tips, rev up your search this Spring and Summer, and you could be well on your way to a new job before Fall!

Lindsay LaPlaca, Operations Recruiter

Linkedin Pic
What do you do in your position? I am an Operations Recruiter for Anchor, Jewel, and GMS, covering the East coast down to Alabama, plus Texas.

When did you join Oldcastle? March, 2018

Where is your job located? Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here? The positive atmosphere and overall office morale here is astonishing.  Everyone is genuinely willing to help with any and every question, and I have a lot of questions!  My co-workers have facilitated a smooth transition from the hospitality industry to the recruiting world, and they continue to make every day interesting.

What are the best parts of your job? I enjoy talking to people from such diverse backgrounds and parts of the country.  The ability to match job seekers to appropriate positions, while also helping managers staff their plants, has been very rewarding.

What was your first job ever? My first job was working in the strawberry fields, picking quarts of berries for sale at a local farm stand in the small town where I grew up.

Would you like to share anything about your family?  My boyfriend Mike and I have lived in the South Wedge for almost 11 years.  We have one crazy cat, and aspirations for a big yard and dogs someday!  My dad, grandma, younger brothers, and niece and nephew live a couple of hours away in the same town where I grew up.

What are your hobbies? I love cooking, food and all things food related, craft beer, and wine education.  I enjoy shopping local farm markets, butchers, and seafood mongers to procure the freshest, most interesting ingredients.  I love spending time outside, especially tending to my flowers and garden.  I have a blast driving my car and tagging along with Mike to driving events in Watkins Glen.  In the winter, we keep busy with downhill skiing, and enjoy traveling and exploring tropical locations.

What was your first concert? As a young kid, my dad took me to a country concert of sorts, although no one can recall the actual artist!  The first concert of my choosing was Dave Matthews Band in Saratoga, back in high school.

What is your favorite movie?  I don’t necessarily have a favorite movie, but I do have an all-time favorite TV show… Friends!
