2 Tools To Drive Your Career Forward

  1. Find out how long your commute will be BEFORE you apply 
    Commute time can be a deal breaker for many people.  According to LinkedIn’s official blog “85% of U.S. professionals say they would take a pay cut for a shorter commute.”  Thanks to a new feature, now there’s no need to leave LinkedIn to find out how far a commute will be. LinkedIn Commute“Your Commute” is available on LinkedIn mobile (if you don’t have it yet, be patient – you will), and should roll out to desktop users within the next few months.

“This new feature will help candidates quickly visualize their daily commute to work, especially those who may not be familiar with a specific part of town or new to a city,” says Christina McPhee, Corporate Recruiter, Oldcastle Precast

2) Are you a Military Spouse? Join the LinkedIn Military & Veteran Program
Starting in July, this program includes one year of LinkedIn Premium that will be available during each move “to new installations  and once again upon conclusion of military service.” In addition, this membership includes access to LinkedIn Learning courses and a military spouse LinkedIn group. This expansion is being made available through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities program.

This Spring, Rely on Referrals!

Spring has sprung! For many, thoughts turn to Spring cleaning, better weather and new beginnings. If finding a new job is on your radar this season, LinkedIn’s latest feature is worth investigating. This past week, on LinkedIn’s Official Blog, they announced an easy way to find and reach out to potential people who could refer you to a target company.

Before we get into the specifics, here’s a reminder why referrals are so important.

  • According to a recent study showcased in an article by the Society for Human Resource Management, employee referrals continue to be many employers top source of hires, delivering more than 30% of all hires overall
  • Referrals are the #1 way job seekers report discovering a job for the first time
  • Close to 50% of recruiters say referrals are a leading source of quality hires 

Now that we’ve hopefully convinced you how valuable referrals are, how do you go about getting a referral into an organization? The process is as simple as a click of a button! Let’s go into LinkedIn and see how it works. Say, for example, you see this Marketing Job that you’re interested in. If you have any connections who can refer you, you will see them. In this case, there are quite a few. Now, click on “Ask for a referral.”

This is what you will see next (below). These are connections with that company.

Then, if you click on the Message button, up pops a pre-populated message that you can edit as appropriate (as seen below).

Play nice – one of many LinkedIn Member Policy Changes You Should Know About

Are you a LinkedIn user? LinkedIn is going to update its terms of service May 8th, and their official blog recently discussed a few of the upcoming changes in depth. Since we’re guessing that lengthy policy updates aren’t the most riveting reading, we’ll break it down for you in brief, layman’s terms.

Adhere to the golden rule
LinkedIn doesn’t call it this, but we do. If you’re an active or even casual LinkedIn user, you may have noticed that some users behave badly, making inappropriate and inflammatory comments. This behavior is never acceptable, but used to be more common on sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. LinkedIn will be curtailing this negative activity, before it escalates. They have the policy broken down into five sections:
– Be Real
– Be Professional
– Be Nice
– Respect each other’s behavior and follow the law
– Respect LinkedIn’s Rights
You can visit their Professional Communities blog post section for specifics. As the site grows in popularity, members and usage, the fact that they have a no tolerance policy on abuse and are enforcing violators is a necessary step in the right direction.

User Agreement Update

In our view, the most pertinent change here is this:
“A new section has been added to the User Agreement to better clarify how we use information and data we have about you to make recommendations to you and others, including to suggest jobs for you and to suggest you to recruiters.”

Privacy Policy
In this section, LinkedIn offers a guided tour explaining the changes. They expand upon what they are allowed to do with member data. LinkedIn can legally receive data about you from partner companies that are affiliated with LinkedIn. This data is used “to provide you with new services and better features.” The policy also talks about social actions – this refers to your LinkedIn activity  (liking, commenting, sharing and posting).

“When you take a social action, we will associate you with the content, companies or people that you shared or followed, and we may also use that social action as part of an ad (unless your settings do not allow that).”

LinkedIn Features – The Latest Word

Puzzled by the latest LinkedIn developments? We’ve got you covered.

1) Show me the money! Introducing Salary Insights

The most recent announcement for the first quarter involves salary transparency. According to LinkedIn’s Official blog, Salary Insights is “a new way for you to explore compensation details on open roles. This feature will appear on job listings.” The information will either be employer provided (ranges for specific jobs) or estimated.

While statistics show that candidates want this information, there are a few caveats to keep in mind, such as:
A) Roles vary widely in organizations and even within the same company. The VP at one company might have the same responsibility as a manager at another. It pays to keep this in mind – it’s not always an ‘apples to apples’ comparison.
B) It’s up to you to know what you’re worth and pursue roles within that range. That being said, don’t automatically discount a job if the salary is not at your exact target. Look at other benefits – including vacation, work schedule (telecommuting, flex time), bonuses, profit sharing, 401k/403b and company match, etc.

2) Resume Assistant is now available to Office 365 subscribers.
Resume Assistant allows you to see examples from other LinkedIn profiles as well as use the top skills in your field to customize your resume for employers. You can pick a role and industry and the Resume Assistant integrates with Word. You can then apply via LinkedIn. It’s a streamlined, convenient merging of two processes. You can learn more about it here.

3) Hiring hits a high note to start off 2018
We saved the best for last! According to the February 2018 US LinkedIn Workforce Report, January hiring across the U.S. was 13.0% higher than in January 2017.

“Seasonally-adjusted hiring was 10.9% higher in January than in December 2017—making January 2018 the strongest month for hiring since May 2017.”

This is great news – especially for job seekers! Whether you’re unemployed and looking for work or employed but looking for a change, this may mean it’s time to make a move.

Making The Most of Mentions

Today we’re going to discuss how to use the ‘mention’ feature on LinkedIn.

  1. How to mention someone by just their first name
    The default for using this feature will include the person’s full name. You do this by using the @ symbol and then typing their name. A drop down box with their profile will appear. Simply click on them and it will show their full name (as seen below).

But, what if you have a closer relationship to the person and want to mention them less formerly using only their first name? No problem! Simply backspace over the last name and hit delete.

2) Don’t abuse the mention! Not everyone appreciates being called out in this way. Only mention someone when it’s appropriate. If someone won an award and you want to congratulate them in the comments – “Great job Sam Smith!” for example, that’s probably fine. Just don’t get spammy and type in multiple names just to draw attention to your post or comment. Be strategic and thoughtful about what you post and who you mention. Avoid overuse or random mentions. Remember, when you mention someone, they now get notified of the likes and comments for that mention.

3) If you want to stop anyone from mentioning YOU, it’s easy. The directions below are if you’re on a laptop/desktop. Doing this on a smartphone, the steps are a little different. For IOS and Android users, the directions can be found here.

Are you getting the results you want from LinkedIn? 3 Tweaks To Try!

Whether you use LinkedIn for networking, personal branding or finding a job, there are tweaks you can make to perfect that profile.

  1. Reorder sections. Did you know you can change the order of current positions, education, volunteer experience and skills and endorsements on LinkedIn? If you want to highlight a degree, job (this works on current positions only) or experience by placing it first, this is a nice feature. skillsIt’s easy! Simply click on “View Profile,” then hover right below the pencil to click and then drag and drop the job, school or experience in the order you want. To rearrange skills and endorsements, click on the pencil and then click on the lines to drag and drop in the order you want. Put the skills you want recruiters and others to see at the top. Note – this may not always match the ones you’ve received the highest number of endorsements for.

As you can see in the box here, social media received the most endorsements. But say for instance, you want to emphasize your editing skills. Simply move that skill to the top.

The benefit of doing this rearrangement is to draw attention to the skills you want connected to yourself, highlighted in the order you want them to be seen. 

2. Request Revisions to your Recommendations
Look at the current recommendations on your profile. Are they a bit dated? Did you know you can ask for a revision? This might be a good thing to do to spruce up an older recommendation or have the recommendation call out different strengths. LinkedIn makes it easy to reach out and reconnect with the person who wrote that original recommendation. To start the process,  click View Profile and scroll down to Recommendations. Click on the pencil next to “Ask to be recommended.”

You will then see the current recommendations you have. Click the Ask for Revision box.

You can then type in your message in the box (as seen above). When you do this, it never hurts to ask if they would like you to also revise a recommendation (if you’ve written one for them in the past).  Never be demanding – you want to touch base on how they are doing as well and then politely position how you want them to focus on the revised recommendation.

3) Worried you might appear too dated? You can remove the dates of your education on LinkedIn. Click on view profile and then scroll to the education section. Click on the drop down. Instead of choosing the years you started and finished your degree, just leave it at year in both the “from” and “to” boxes and click save when you’re done. This tweak can also be used in conjunction with tip number one. You could remove dates and move a desired education to appear first (even if it wasn’t the most recent). The goal is to always position your profile with the most impressive and relevant information at the top.

Dial In On The Latest LinkedIn Features

We talk a lot about LinkedIn on this blog because it’s a valuable tool for job seekers. If you’re not on there, you should be – no matter what your profession – engineer to executive, driver to drafter. So, what’s new in LinkedIn land? Plenty. LinkedIn never fails to update features that are worth looking into.

Do you need help creating a resume?
This is a cool one! LinkedIn is rolling out a Resume Assistant. According to the LinkedIn blog“With this integration, you’ll get the inspiration and resources to craft a compelling resume directly within Microsoft Word, and you’ll see relevant job opportunities on LinkedIn that are personalized for you.”  Users will be able to try this feature as it becomes available to everyone in the next few months.

Want to be the first to know when jobs in your field are posted?
While LinkedIn currently shows you “Jobs You May Be Interested In,” this doesn’t guarantee you’ll see the exact types of matches you’re looking for. Take control and set up alerts to make sure that you won’t miss out on any opportunities. To do this, sign up for Job Search Alerts. You can do this on your desktop or from the LinkedIn Job Search App. From the desktop, click on jobs. You will see the search bar. From there, type in the type of job you’re looking for. You can also search by company, keywords, etc. In this example, we’re setting up an alert for an engineer job.

Next, click on the button that says Create search alert.

This brings you to a screen where you can choose to receive the alert daily or weekly, via e-mail, mobile and desktop notification or both.

Fall Job Search? Easy as Pie!

Say Hello To Smart Replies

LinkedIn has taken the messaging feature and enhanced it with smart replies. Basically, these are suggested responses within a message. According to the LinkedIn official blog, ‘machine learning’ works its magic to “show you suggestions that are more contextual and relevant to the conversation you’re having. We’ll suggest at most three responses based on the message you’ve received.” If you like a response, simply click on it, hit enter, and it sends back the automated reply.”

You don’t have to choose their responses, but this feature can save you time and open up new conversation ideas you might not have otherwise thought to use. If you don’t want this feature, you can turn it off in settings. The default is set to on.

Seek Out Company Lists To Research & Target Companies

Are you applying to jobs online but not having any luck? Start looking for company lists. You’ll be surprised to discover companies you didn’t even know were in your area. In our city for example, the Sunday paper just came out with an in-depth article and list with profiles of the top 100 privately owned winning companies in the Rochester area. What a great resource! Study it, cross reference it with people you know, and use it to find out more about potential employers. Your local chamber of commerce may also have lists. And, don’t forget your local library. You don’t have to pay for a subscription to the paper. Our libraries carry the Rochester Business Journal weekly paper and Book of Lists. Both are a wealth of information about companies, organizations, executives and the latest business news.

Perpetual Job Searching

We know this is not everyone’s favorite thing to do. You may love your job. You may not even have a job search on your radar. Here’s the thing. You never know what could happen. You always want to be prepared for the worst case job scenario. We’re going to assume that you have your resume updated and ready to go (right?). Take this preparation one step further. Know what jobs are out there online in your field AT ALL TIMES. Why is this so important? Online job postings are full of clues. For example, let’s say you’re an Engineer and see an ad for Engineering role continually showing up at the same company every few months. On one hand – yes, they could be adding headcount. On the other, it could be a red flag of high turnover, a bad environment and a company you want to stay away from. If you haven’t been consistently looking at jobs online, you wouldn’t know that the same job was available again so soon. Knowledge is power! It only take five to ten minutes to search jobs weekly via Google. Get in there and type in “Engineer Rochester NY” or whatever your field is and look around.

Search Appearances

How do you know if your LinkedIn profile is optimized so employers and recruiters can find it? This can be a whole blog post itself. One way to check to see if you’re getting found for the right positions is to look at what keywords were used to find your profile. To do this, go to your profile and go to your dashboard.

See where it says Search Appearances? Click on that.

Here is one example (above). On your profile, do the terms line up with what kind of job you’re looking for? If not, your LinkedIn profile needs some work.

Please don’t give up on your job search this fourth quarter. There are still companies hiring before the end of the year. End 2017 on a strong note. Keep pushing!

6 Quick Ways To Make Your LinkedIn Status Updates Count

Depositphotos_153631700_m-2015Optimize your engagement, views and connections on LinkedIn by following a set strategy. It’s easy to do, only takes a small amount of time, and the rewards can be great.
1) Set up a posting schedule
Are you just posting now and then? Yes, some activity is better than none. However, it pays to post consistently. Choose a schedule that works best for you. For instance, decide that you want to post new content at least twice a week. In addition, make time to share, comment and like other people’s posts. This could be done in set time increments – for instance, vow to spend ten minutes after lunch or split it into two five minute sessions at the beginning and end of the work day. The point is to just start!
2) Decide what to post
What is your goal on LinkedIn?  Some goals might be to:
– Establish credibility in your field
– Gain exposure to potential employers
– Find a new job
– Increase your connections
Once you’ve established your goal(s), the content you create and share should align with that goal. For instance, if your goal is to land a new role in the construction field, start posting links that would be helpful for people working in that industry. You can google articles about construction trends and post those articles. Besides what you post, you also want to share, like and comment on other people’s construction related topics. Join relevant groups related to your goal as well.
3) Make your posts stand out
Don’t just cut and paste a link as your status update. Go into the article and cut and paste a relevant line from the article. The article title already shows as a default with the photo. Take it one step further to create interest. Or, ask a question.
Take the article below for example. This article has an appealing photo with it, so that’s a good start. In posting this, you could add a question or comment like “What do you think of this staircase?” Or “Wouldn’t you like to have this in your office?” The goal is to get people looking and hopefully commenting about your content.

4) Don’t be afraid to get personal
LinkedIn is NOT Facebook, so we aren’t suggesting you fill your feed with selfies. But, there is a way to add a touch of personality while still remaining professional. Think about what catches your eye in the feed. Boring news stories don’t. Real life events and activities and unique, cool content does. There are interesting things about every industry that you can share. Have you attended a conference or given a presentation recently? Has your team participated in some event? Post a photo about that. Here’s an example:

5) Pay attention to the analytics for each post to guide future posts
The stats below are from the post image used above. As you can see, this post did well, receiving over 1,100 views. LinkedIn recently added great analytics so you can see who looked at your post, how many views it received and what companies and areas of the country they came from.

In this case, this person has less than 500 connections on LinkedIn, but the post received more views than the number of connections they had because of the likes and attention it received. 

The better your post does, the more people will see it. The activity related to the post feeds upon itself.  Simply put – the algorithm on LinkedIn rewards posts that do well by showing/serving them up to even more people.

There’s a more technical explanation behind the algorithm, but that is the basic theory. In addition, if you want to make new connections beyond your initial ones, this is an excellent way to get more eyes on you and your content.

6) Vary the type of posts
Post an article, then an image and then a video. Give LinkedIn self publishing a try. The key here is to vary your content. Once you get in a rhythm, it’s easy and can be fun to see what content works and how well it can do. Not every post will be a winner, but if you stick with it over time, you will see your reach and engagement increase. More attention means more potential to target potential employers and get contacted by recruiters for that dream job!

P.S. We often get the question – When is a good time to post?
You want to post when your potential audience is online. Beginning of the day, end of the day and at lunch can be good times. Friday afternoons – not so much. That being said, people are now on LinkedIn much more often than they used to be – that can even include holidays, nights and weekends. So, don’t be afraid to post early or late or in the off times. Again, the algorithm LinkedIn uses comes into play, as well as time zones in different parts of the country.

In addition, the default setting for content does not show the most recent posts, but what LinkedIn considers “Top” posts (as seen here). topEventually, content you post is seen – but it may not be right away. This is why a consistent posting schedule works so well – it gives you the opportunity to be seen in the feed more often over time. Note- you can always change the default setting from ‘Top’ to ‘Recent’ content.

Have you heard of these new LinkedIn features?

Animated image of two people talking through cups as they appear on a computer screenLinkedIn is constantly evolving, so it can be easy to miss new enhancements. This post doesn’t cover every new LinkedIn feature, but hopefully there are enough here to pique your interest and get you more engaged on the site.

1) You can now add multiple photos to a status post. As of right now, this is only available on mobile iOS, but Android and desktop will be next. Photos dramatically increase engagement, so it’s worth adding visuals to your updates. If you have an iPhone, give it a try – you’ll be ahead of others who don’t know about this functionality yet!

2) Tap into your alumni network with the Alumni Tool. See “what companies your alumni work at, where they live now, what skills they have and what they studied to get to where they are.” This can be a great tool to use to find people at your target companies, make connections and be introduced to an even wider network that share your same educational background. You can filter results by years attended or graduated and date. You can even change the university. Take a look at this screen shot (below) to see the wealth of information now available.

Scrolling a little further, you also get a screen like the one below. From this screen, you can easily message fellow alumni and see what connections you share.

3) Up your engagement by adding images to your comments. Simply click the photo icon to add an image and add your comment like you normally would. This is another easy way to stand out.

4) Say hello to Search Appearances! Available since late June, this feature tells you how many people found you via LinkedIn search, where they work and their job titles. This is a good way to investigate companies you may not have known about previously. Also, take notice of the industries and types of companies. If you’re not attracting your target organizations, this is a good time to edit your LinkedIn profile in order to do so.

To get to this information, go to View Profile first, scroll down once you’re on that page and then click on Search Appearances.

** Note – sometimes LinkedIn does not roll out changes to all users all at once. So, if you don’t have access to all of these features yet, don’t fret – they’re coming.
