6 Quick Ways To Make Your LinkedIn Status Updates Count

Depositphotos_153631700_m-2015Optimize your engagement, views and connections on LinkedIn by following a set strategy. It’s easy to do, only takes a small amount of time, and the rewards can be great.
1) Set up a posting schedule
Are you just posting now and then? Yes, some activity is better than none. However, it pays to post consistently. Choose a schedule that works best for you. For instance, decide that you want to post new content at least twice a week. In addition, make time to share, comment and like other people’s posts. This could be done in set time increments – for instance, vow to spend ten minutes after lunch or split it into two five minute sessions at the beginning and end of the work day. The point is to just start!
2) Decide what to post
What is your goal on LinkedIn?  Some goals might be to:
– Establish credibility in your field
– Gain exposure to potential employers
– Find a new job
– Increase your connections
Once you’ve established your goal(s), the content you create and share should align with that goal. For instance, if your goal is to land a new role in the construction field, start posting links that would be helpful for people working in that industry. You can google articles about construction trends and post those articles. Besides what you post, you also want to share, like and comment on other people’s construction related topics. Join relevant groups related to your goal as well.
3) Make your posts stand out
Don’t just cut and paste a link as your status update. Go into the article and cut and paste a relevant line from the article. The article title already shows as a default with the photo. Take it one step further to create interest. Or, ask a question.
Take the article below for example. This article has an appealing photo with it, so that’s a good start. In posting this, you could add a question or comment like “What do you think of this staircase?” Or “Wouldn’t you like to have this in your office?” The goal is to get people looking and hopefully commenting about your content.

4) Don’t be afraid to get personal
LinkedIn is NOT Facebook, so we aren’t suggesting you fill your feed with selfies. But, there is a way to add a touch of personality while still remaining professional. Think about what catches your eye in the feed. Boring news stories don’t. Real life events and activities and unique, cool content does. There are interesting things about every industry that you can share. Have you attended a conference or given a presentation recently? Has your team participated in some event? Post a photo about that. Here’s an example:

5) Pay attention to the analytics for each post to guide future posts
The stats below are from the post image used above. As you can see, this post did well, receiving over 1,100 views. LinkedIn recently added great analytics so you can see who looked at your post, how many views it received and what companies and areas of the country they came from.

In this case, this person has less than 500 connections on LinkedIn, but the post received more views than the number of connections they had because of the likes and attention it received. 

The better your post does, the more people will see it. The activity related to the post feeds upon itself.  Simply put – the algorithm on LinkedIn rewards posts that do well by showing/serving them up to even more people.

There’s a more technical explanation behind the algorithm, but that is the basic theory. In addition, if you want to make new connections beyond your initial ones, this is an excellent way to get more eyes on you and your content.

6) Vary the type of posts
Post an article, then an image and then a video. Give LinkedIn self publishing a try. The key here is to vary your content. Once you get in a rhythm, it’s easy and can be fun to see what content works and how well it can do. Not every post will be a winner, but if you stick with it over time, you will see your reach and engagement increase. More attention means more potential to target potential employers and get contacted by recruiters for that dream job!

P.S. We often get the question – When is a good time to post?
You want to post when your potential audience is online. Beginning of the day, end of the day and at lunch can be good times. Friday afternoons – not so much. That being said, people are now on LinkedIn much more often than they used to be – that can even include holidays, nights and weekends. So, don’t be afraid to post early or late or in the off times. Again, the algorithm LinkedIn uses comes into play, as well as time zones in different parts of the country.

In addition, the default setting for content does not show the most recent posts, but what LinkedIn considers “Top” posts (as seen here). topEventually, content you post is seen – but it may not be right away. This is why a consistent posting schedule works so well – it gives you the opportunity to be seen in the feed more often over time. Note- you can always change the default setting from ‘Top’ to ‘Recent’ content.

Have you heard of these new LinkedIn features?

Animated image of two people talking through cups as they appear on a computer screenLinkedIn is constantly evolving, so it can be easy to miss new enhancements. This post doesn’t cover every new LinkedIn feature, but hopefully there are enough here to pique your interest and get you more engaged on the site.

1) You can now add multiple photos to a status post. As of right now, this is only available on mobile iOS, but Android and desktop will be next. Photos dramatically increase engagement, so it’s worth adding visuals to your updates. If you have an iPhone, give it a try – you’ll be ahead of others who don’t know about this functionality yet!

2) Tap into your alumni network with the Alumni Tool. See “what companies your alumni work at, where they live now, what skills they have and what they studied to get to where they are.” This can be a great tool to use to find people at your target companies, make connections and be introduced to an even wider network that share your same educational background. You can filter results by years attended or graduated and date. You can even change the university. Take a look at this screen shot (below) to see the wealth of information now available.

Scrolling a little further, you also get a screen like the one below. From this screen, you can easily message fellow alumni and see what connections you share.

3) Up your engagement by adding images to your comments. Simply click the photo icon to add an image and add your comment like you normally would. This is another easy way to stand out.

4) Say hello to Search Appearances! Available since late June, this feature tells you how many people found you via LinkedIn search, where they work and their job titles. This is a good way to investigate companies you may not have known about previously. Also, take notice of the industries and types of companies. If you’re not attracting your target organizations, this is a good time to edit your LinkedIn profile in order to do so.

To get to this information, go to View Profile first, scroll down once you’re on that page and then click on Search Appearances.

** Note – sometimes LinkedIn does not roll out changes to all users all at once. So, if you don’t have access to all of these features yet, don’t fret – they’re coming.

4 Quick Ways To Enhance Your LinkedIn Exposure

Linked Word Name Tags Sphere Connecting NetworkingWe’ve all heard the standard LinkedIn advice – fill out your profile completely, use key words in your field, etc. What else can you do to take your profile from good to great?

  1. Reorder your skills
  2. Customize your URL
  3. Get a profile badge
  4. Start Self Publishing


1) Reorder Skills & Endorsements
LinkedIn automatically ranks these based on number. But, let’s say you would rather emphasize a skill that ranks lower. No problem! Simply drag that skill to appear closer to the top. This is a great way to highlight the most important attributes to match a job you may be applying for.

2) Customize your URL
You don’t have to settle for the default LinkedIn URL with random numbers that LinkedIn assigns to your account. Change and customize it. It’s easy! Simply click on the Me icon, then View Profile, then Edit your public profile. Then, type in the new URL in the text box.  This custom URL can have 5-30 letters or numbers (no spaces, symbols, or special characters). The nice thing about having this link is that you can now share it.

3) Create a Profile Badge
pbadgeMake a custom button that you can use to promote your profile. You can add this to your blog, email or website/online resume. There are different sizes/styles to choose from. Go here to get started. 

 

4) Start Self Publishing
We’ve praised self publishing on LinkedIn before, and we’re singing its praises again. Why? It’s a great way to get in the feed of your connections. In addition, writing a post shows off your communication skills. In addition, the articles you write show up predominately in Google searches. Want to differentiate yourself from another candidate in your field? Which candidate do you think a recruiter or hiring manager would gravitate towards – one with a selection of industry related posts or one without any? Brand Yourself Like A Business On LinkedIn

1)     Don’t just ‘Set & Forget’

You need to create, post and share fresh content to continue to show up in the feed and remain on the radar of your connections.

2)     Show some personality

Content is king! Think about what catches your eye when scrolling your LinkedIn feed. No one wants to see a sales pitch or boring statuses. Instead, aim for useful, interesting and engaging content that’s heavy on visual images and links. According to recent statistics released by Social Media Today, 98% of posts with images receive more comments, and posts with links have a 200% higher engagement rate.  A good rule of thumb is to post 20% news (about your company/job), 30% industry information, 30% helpful material/links and 20% fun, creative content.

3)     Schedule out your content

Decide how many posts you want to write/share by week. For example, Monday: image with a career/industry related quote using the hashtag #MotivationMonday. Tuesday: A link related to news in your industry. Wednesday: a link to a ‘fun’ or interesting article or photo, Thursday: Link or image for an upcoming company event. Friday: #FlashbackFriday hashtag and image.

4)     Decide when you will post

Opinions on this vary. Friday afternoon at 4:30 is not a great time. You need to consider your connections. When are they online? Does your business have locations in other time zones? The nice thing about LinkedIn is that older posts do appear in the feed days or weeks later, so content still gets exposure after that initial posting. In addition, the more engagement (like/comments/shares), the greater reach that post will have. Popular posts are distributed to more people in the feed. This is why putting effort into quality content instead of quantity pays off.

5)     Put on your creative hat

While LinkedIn is more formal than other social media channels like Facebook, there is still the opportunity to be professionally playful. For instance, start with the next upcoming holiday and see if you can create an image to play off that occasion that relates to your business. The engagement and exposure you get from this can really pay off. People love to see, like, comment on and share things that are interesting, funny and intriguing/unique. 

6)     Use free tools

Don’t have the graphic design skills or resources to devote to creating and posting the content? Not a problem! There are sites where you can find free images and online tools that will save you time and effort. Canva.com  can be used to create images/infographics and https://unsplash.com/ or http://startupstockphotos.com/ are good for finding free photos.  There are also many reasonably priced photo sites such as Depositphotos.com that are worth checking out.

7)     Set goals, track progress and update along the way

What are your goals on LinkedIn? To make connections? Network? Find a job?  Set tangible goals and give yourself a realistic timeframe to achieve them. “Increase connection by 15% over the next 6 months.” Or, “Get 50 likes and comments by the end of the month.” If a post is doing really well for you, try to replicate that type of content for future, similar posts.

With a little time and effort, your LinkedIn page can be a great way to increase visibility of your personal brand.

Smile! Picture Perfect Profile Tips For LinkedIn

How happy are you with your LinkedIn profile and cover photos? It’s a good idea to evaluate the professional image you’re portraying.

1) When was the last time you updated your profile photo?

If your profile photo is over two years old, we recommend getting a new one. People change over time. Make sure your photo is current! A ten year old photo just doesn’t cut it. Yes, you may have looked a lot more youthful, but walking into an interview not even closely resembling what you look like in that old photo is not doing you any favors. And remember, every time you update your profile photo on LinkedIn, all your connections will see that change. It’s another easy way to appear in the feed. Appearing in the feed = exposure and being top of mind.

2) Do you have a cover photo?

Not everyone chooses to have a cover photo, and we’re not sure why. This is another easy way you can differentiate yourself. You could make yours industry or job related if you like. The key is to always pick something compelling, engaging and eye catching.

3) Are your photos the right size?

According to this very helpful “Cheat Sheet,” these are the recommended sizes:

LinkedIn profile: between 1000 x 425 pixels and 4,000 x 4,000 pixels.

Linked in profile picture: between 400 x 400 pixels and 20,000 x 20,000 pixels.

Max file size: 8MB File type must be PNG, JPEG, or GIF.

4) What message do your photos send?

Think about this one for a minute. Some industries are conservative, while others a bit more lenient. You want to fit in with your field. However, always keep in mind that this is not Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram! I can’t tell you the number of times we’ve seen really inappropriate profile pictures. If you’re trying to present yourself in the best light to recruiters, hiring managers and potential employers, a bad, inappropriate photo really works against you. This mean no low cut/tight clothing, sloppy attire, bad lighting, casual, alcohol/party type photos etc. The site is meant to be for professional networking. Take the time and effort to showcase yourself in the most flattering way.

5) Have you gotten other people’s opinions on your photos?

Ask your colleagues, friends and family what they think. If you want to analyze your current photo online, check out this interesting/fun tool: Snapp’r Photo Analyzer. “Snappr’s Photo Analyzer uses the latest research, combined with image recognition and machine learning technologies, to determine how well your photo will perform.” Take the results with a grain of salt, although they do offer some solid suggestions.

4 Myths That Keep Your LinkedIn Profile From Blooming

Just like Spring flowers need attention and nurturing, so does your LinkedIn profile. Here are some common myths about LinkedIn and simple suggestions to make your profile blossom this season and beyond.

1) Multiple endorsements are better than just a few recommendations
I’m not saying endorsements are bad.But, think for a minute how easy they are to get. All a person has to do is click. A recommendation takes thought and greater effort. Aim to get a few high quality recommendations on your profile and return the favor.

2) As long as I’ve completed my LinkedIn profile, I’m fine
It’s a great first step, but to maximize the power of LinkedIn, get involved. Post status updates, “like,” comment and share things that your connections post. These activities will get you in front of non-connections, expanding your reach.

3) I can only contact people who are connections
Not true! If you share a group membership, you can reach out to them.

4) Publishing a post is tricky,  time consuming and only for writers
Actually, writing on LinkedIn is quite easy. The blogging platform is intuitive to use. You don’t need to be a professional writer. All you need is a topic. Start with that and write in a conversational style. Use bullets and numbered lists (like you see in this post). Share something of value to others in your field. We all have areas of expertise. Your knowledge and insight help showcase your value to your connections (and potentially a new employer!).

4 Ways To Make The Most of Social Media In Your Job Search

A new report by the nonprofit  Pew Research Center shows that 79% of job seekers used online resources in their job search and 34% say that “these online resources were the most important tool available to them.”

So, how can you make the most of social media to find that dream job?

  1. Don’t just rely on job postings
    By all means, look at the listings, but extend your reach beyond just job ads. Companies could be in growth mode, but haven’t yet posted new positions. Keep your eye out for companies that have landed new clients/contracts and/or are expanding their product line, customer base, etc. To do this, follow local newspapers, trade associations and other company related Facebook pages and Twitter accounts.
  2. Research your field and target companies
    Back in the day (less than 20 years ago), finding out more about companies was limited to a company website, the newspaper and trade journals. Now, you have multiple channels to dig deeper. You can use LinkedIn to see who works at companies you’re interested in, and you can google a company’s name. You can even set up alerts to monitor anytime that company is mentioned online.socialm
  3. Become a networking ninja
    While nothing replaces face-to-face networking, social media is a great way to initiate contact. Have you ever participated in a LinkedIn group? What about a Twitter chat? Informally (yet still professionally) engaging with a company or person from a company is easier (and less pressure filled) online. Say, for instance, you see a manager or a recruiter for a company tweet out interesting industry news. Get the conversation and relationship started by replying with an appropriate comment. The same holds true for LinkedIn. In particular, LinkedIn is a great place to show your expertise in your field – sharing relevant content, self publishing on the site and posting helpful links.
  4. Be a participant, not an observer.
    It’s all too easy to sit back and peruse the social media sites without doing a thing. However, that is no more productive than binge watching your favorite TV show. You need to search, read and respond. Be proactive.

Do you use Twitter lists? They are a great way to organize your followers and gain more followers. Basically, you can create a list with any title of your choice. For example, you could have a list like “Engineering Firms,” Local News Stations, Interesting Local Companies, Social Media Experts, etc. You can add people to these lists – even if they don’t follow you. By clicking on your list, you can see the feed of tweets for your list. It saves time so you can get all related news and tweets at once. In addition, many people are flattered by being added to a list, so you may gain some new followers to boot! Intrigued? Find out more here.

Short on time? 3 Quick LinkedIn Fixes

timerLinkedIn is becoming increasingly more important for your career. Because the site is now so popular, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. Here are quick and easy tips to make sure that doesn’t happen to you. We’ve even timed out each suggestion for you.

  1. Supercharge your profile.
    What do we mean by this? Simple. If you want to stand out, you can’t just make your profile a replica of your resume. Unlike a resume, you can visually enhance your LinkedIn page. Add images, photos (projects you’ve done), presentations – even video. It’s easy. See the Summary section below? Simply click on the box on your own page to upload your media.
    Time commitment – 15 minutes, then 5 minutes going forward

2. Make sure you customize your LinkedIn URL and start sharing it
LinkedIn automatically assigns you an address as part of your profile. This address has numbers in it.
For example, which one looks better to you?

A) Old LinkedIn URL:  linkedin.com/pub/ArthurJobseeker/54/754/5a6

B) Customized LinkedIn URL: linkedin.com/pub/ArthurJobseeker

Who wants choice A? It’s clunky! Instead, go into your profile (at the top of your homepage) and change it. Here’s the link with directions on how to do it. Now, it will be easier to share and for others to remember. Put it on your resume, add it to the bottom of your email signature and don’t forget to include it on your social media profiles.
Time commitment – Less than ten minutes

3. Be ACTIVE on the site
Aim for a status post, one comment and a few likes a week

The old saying “out of sight, out of mind” is true. A typical LinkedIn user has over 300 connections. How is your future boss or that hiring manager going to see you? Unless you specifically respond to a job posting or meet someone while networking, your page will not be heavily viewed.

Remember, every time you post an update, that update is seen by your 1st degree connections. If they like, comment or share, their network then sees it. This expands your reach exponentially. “But, I don’t have anything to share!” Not to worry – start by commenting, sharing or liking posts first. Then, go online to see if there is any industry news you can share. If you belong to a professional association or another group, check out their website, Facebook page or LinkedIn page if they have one. There are many sites with great articles out there. Once you find your favorites, you should not have any trouble getting pertinent content to use on LinkedIn.
Time commitment – Less than 15 minutes

Bonus Tip: If you’re feeling really motivated, take it a step further and create your own blog posts on LinkedIn’s self publishing platform. Now, anyone can share their professional expertise. Writing a post takes more time, but every time you publish your post, all your connections see a notification that you’ve written new content. Talk about getting in front of a big audience! If you were laid off tomorrow, would you be prepared to find a new job?

Whether you’ve been at your job two years or twenty, there is always the possibility of being let go. So, what steps can you take to be prepared?

1) Have an updated resume on hand at all times
 A layoff is a traumatic life event. It takes time to process the shock and emotions and start your search. If you have your resume complete, that means you are at least initially prepared for the job search journey. Not only that, if you happen to be a part of a mass layoff, you’ll be one step ahead of your competition. 2) Make it a priority to check in on LinkedIn a few times a week.
It doesn’t take much time to post a status update and like or comment on what your connections are up to. Recruiters often see a flurry of activity on LinkedIn from people who have just been let go. It makes sense that you spend more time on LinkedIn when you have the day to job search. BUT, connections are better made before you need them. Networking is a give and take, and desperation never comes off as appealing. Bonus points if you get or give recommendations before you need them.  Note – don’t go overboard with this one. When you’re actually updating your page, keep the privacy settings on so people can’t see what updates you’re making. You don’t want to make your current employer suspicious.

3) Scan the online job postings at least once a week
Make it a habit to know what’s out there. You’ll start to see hiring trends. Are there certain companies who seem to be  on the upswing? The job listings will reflect that. You’ll also see some companies post the same job within the same year. Is this a clue they experience high turnover? If you hadn’t been monitoring the job search sites on a frequent basis, you would never know that position had just recently been filled.

4)  Stay current on local business news 
It doesn’t take much time to scan the business section of the local paper (online or hard copy) or catch the local news to stay informed on what businesses are growing in your community.

5) Commit to one networking event a quarter
Every field/industry has meetings and other events. The event doesn’t have to be networking focused. A training or speaking event can also provide opportunities to meet people. Don’t like to network? Read this article for some networking tips.

6) Start thinking about who you would use for references
While submitting references is usually the last part of the job search process, there are certain applications that require them upfront. Tread carefully on this step. You don’t want to ask anyone from your current job yet. You could approach a boss from a prior position to be one of your references. The point of this step is just to get you thinking about who you could use if needed. This article gives additional advice on making the most of your references.

7) Be smart about that safety cushion
The common sentiment is to have 6 months of readily available cash for emergencies. A layoff clearly counts as an emergency. You may or may not get a severance package, and unemployment only goes so far. Yes, the discipline and sacrifice to have this monetary reserve is not easy. Child rearing expenses, car/home repairs and life necessities come first. Start by setting aside twenty dollars  a week. Small amounts add up over time. Here’s an article on creating a financial safety net if you need a little nudge in the right direction.

Being job search ready at all times does not really take that much additional time or effort. While you may be fortunate enough to never experience a layoff,  this proactive approach will give you peace of mind and the tools you need to land on your feet.
