Frank Battaglia, Corporate Recruiter

frankbWhat do you do in your position?  I am a recruiter for the Materials Division of Oldcastle.

When did you join Oldcastle? November, 2016

Where is your job located?  Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here? So far, I’ve most enjoyed the people and the fast-paced environment.  Everyone is down-to-earth and has been really supportive in answering all of my questions and making me feel at home.

What are the best parts of your job? What I’ve liked most about my role is the variety.  Coming from an agency setting, I was recruiting for, in general, one specific background/skill set.  Here at Oldcastle, I’ve already sourced and recruited for IT Business Analysts, Public Relations Specialists and Accounting professionals. This type of variety definitely keeps you on your toes, which I enjoy.

What would co-workers say about you? My co-workers would probably say that I laugh at almost anything and always put in an honest effort.

What was your first job ever? My first ever job was a Floor Associate at Target.  It wasn’t glamorous, but helped keep some money in my pocket between high school & college when Mom & Dad decided I was old enough to earn my own keep.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories? I haven’t been here quite long enough to have any interesting on-the-job stories, but while working at Rite-Aid during a Summer in College, I was involved in a case of mistaken identity.  We had an employee let go by our manager, and, a few days later, the employee’s dad came storming into the store screaming at me and literally tried to jump across the counter that I was standing at.  Our actual manager heard the commotion and had me run back to the stock room and close the door.  It turns out the dad mistook me for the Manager. Long story short, about 15-20 minutes later, the manager came back and told me it was safe to come back out.  I don’t think the police were involved because our manager was a big guy, but needless to say, the father was no longer there when I came back to the front.

What do you do outside of work? I’ve played soccer my whole life and continue to do so, both indoor during the Winter months and outdoor the rest of the year.  I’ve completed a handful of half marathons, and, at some point, would like to run a full marathon here in the area, and eventually the Boston and/or NYC Marathons.

Would you like to share anything about your family?  My immediate family is here in Rochester, and I have one younger brother.  Don’t ask me if I know any other Battaglia’s because oddly enough, almost none of that side of my family resides in Rochester, and, as a result, it’s either been a long time since seeing them or I just haven’t met many of them.  Almost everywhere I go, someone asks if I know a Battaglia, and I tell them this short story (don’t worry, I’m not mad if you’ve asked me that question).

I am a Corporate Recruiter for Oldcastle.  This position requires me to post new job opportunities on our company website as well as a number of external job boards.  I review all candidate resumes submitted, and select the best talent for phone interviews.  I then conduct interviews and forward top performers to Hiring Managers at Oldcastle facilities all over the United States.

When did you join Oldcastle? August 2016

Where is your job located?  Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here?  My coworkers!  They have helped me so much since  day one, and they are still helping me to this day.  I’m pretty grateful to be a part of the team.

What are the best parts of your job? The best part of my job is building a relationship with the mangers that I’m working with in different states.  Getting to know them better, understanding what they are looking for in a candidate, and learning a little bit more  about the group that I’m supporting.

What would co-workers say about you?  I hope they would say that I’m funny, a hard worker, a bad singer, and helpful.

Jennifer Latone, Driver Recruiter

jl5What do you do in your position? I am a Driver Recruiter for Allied Building Products, the distribution division of Oldcastle.  My focus is to identify talented CDL drivers across the states to join our team delivering both interior and exterior building products locally to our customers.

When did you join Oldcastle? August 2016

Where is your job located?  Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here?  So far, it’s absolutely the team here! Everyone is so supportive and friendly. It seems that everyone really enjoys what they do and works hard to achieve their goals. It’s pretty awesome to be working with like-minded people.

What are the best parts of your job? What I really like about Oldcastle is that I’m not trying to fill temporary positions like some of my previous recruiting work. Being able to help a person find stable employment with a successful company makes me feel good. The fact that it’s so easy to “sell” a company that treats its employees awesome, has great benefits, and so much room for growth makes it not feel like a “sell” at all.

What would co-workers say about you? Can anyone ever answer this question? Ha, ha! Well, I would think they probably would say that I have a positive attitude and always do my best. They may say that I’m a bit of a joker filled with useless information too, lol.

What was your first job ever? I think I was 14/15 and I worked at my local pizzeria – LB’s Pizza in Lima, NY. I’d get up super early on the weekend and go in to do all the prep work for the day.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories? Let’s see…one time I had a little fender bender on the way to work, and, just as I pulled up in front of my job, my whole engine went up in flames! They had to evacuate the building until the fire department came because it might have exploded. That was pretty interesting and super embarrassing!

What do you do outside of work? I love to spend time with my mom and two sisters most of all. I am often doing some sort of experimental cooking and love learning anything new. Most of the time, I am just spoiling my cat Ludo, binge watching Netflix, or have my nose in a good book, lol. I’m a bit of a homebody.

Would you like to share anything about your family?  We are mostly a family of girls, and yet we are more mechanically inclined than most. My (tiny) big sister was a mechanic for GM for years, and I took schooling for building mechanics just so we could be self-sufficient and not have to call anyone to fix anything. I have to say that it has turned out to be a pretty handy thing.

Bonus fun fact: Both my mother and big sister were born in Japan, and I could use chopsticks before regular silverware. 🙂

I am a Corporate Recruiter for Oldcastle Precast, a division of Oldcastle. Oldcastle Precast is a leading manufacturer of precast concrete in the U.S. My job helps busy managers across the country find qualified candidates faster and more efficiently.

When did you join Oldcastle? I started in April, 2016!

Where is your job located?
I work in the recruiting office in Rochester, NY.

What do you like about working here?
My coworkers in the recruiting office are super friendly and helpful.  This is my first full-time position after college, so I am grateful that everyone is willing to lend a hand when I have a question.  I know that I have so much to learn, but I am fortunate to have found an opportunity with growth potential and many smart people to look up to!

What are the best parts of your job?
One of my favorite parts of my job is assisting recruiters in the office by sourcing for candidates on different job boards to help give their openings more exposure.  It is a great feeling to hear that I helped them to find qualified candidates and to fill positions faster.  Another part of my job that I love is helping different managers across the country with posting jobs and answering any of their questions.  Though I will not meet most of them in person, I enjoy developing relationships via email or over the phone and doing whatever I can to make their job easier.

CorporateChallenge2016

What would co-workers say about you?
I hope that they would say that I am a hard worker and always willing to help out in any way that I can!

What was your first job ever?
I worked at Delta Sonic car wash as a cashier.  It was a great first job because it taught me valuable customer service skills. It was not a typical cashier role because I earned commission on the different products I up-sold to customers.  Some of the skills I learned working at Delta I will take with me throughout my career.

LeaP

Corporate Challenge 2016

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories?
I visited a manufacturing branch in Fishers, NY that produces cement blocks.  The branch manager took us on a very thorough tour of the facility.  It was great to see the branch because it gave me a much better idea of some of the positions we recruit for beyond the details of a job description.

What do you do outside of work?
I spend most of my nights after work relaxing with my family or reading a good book.  On the weekends, I enjoy seeing my friends, going shopping, and spending some time outside.  Also, I love to travel and explore new places.

Would you like to share anything about your family?
I grew up in West Irondequoit with my parents and older sister.  My mom is a landscape designer, my dad is a manager of a vacuum store and my sister is a kindergarten teacher.  I love to spend time with them and we all get along very well!

Steven Davison, Recruiting Support Coordinator

StevenDavisonWhat do you do in your position?  I am responsible for creating and managing non-exempt job postings for our Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope® division, which designs, engineers, and manufactures glass and glazing systems. Ensuring that posted jobs are consistent and compliant is a major part of my job.  When I am not posting, I proactively help search for candidates from various sources.

When did you join Oldcastle?
March 2016

Where is your job located?
Our office is located in Rochester, NY.

What do you like about working here?
The team atmosphere. During my first week, I met with every manager and coworker in the office. It really made me feel welcome. I am surrounded by great performers who work together to effectively find the best candidates for the right jobs.

What are the best parts of your job?
Our recruiting center is starting off a new phase of recruiting with Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope®, and I am glad to be part of something new and exciting.  Helping to take the work load off of human resource managers from having to post and manage jobs is my main function right now. I like to analyze the best words and ways to create an effective job description that will help the best candidates find our jobs. I look forward to building great internal relationships so our team can provide more services in the future.

What would co-workers say about you?
I hope they would say I’m helpful.

What was your first job ever?
Pizza Hut as a pizza maker. I’ll never be able to erase from my memory exactly how many pepperonis go on a large pizza.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories?
One of my current coworkers from a previous job at a large company turned out to be one of my coworkers a few years down the road at another position. Luckily, we worked well together in the past, and had a lot of respect for each other, so we picked up right where we left off. This goes to show you that you should always network and maintain good working relationships because you never know what future connections might happen.

What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy playing the drums, and I play for my church. I also like to stay active. I enjoy going to the gym, and, when the weather gets warm, I enjoy doing outdoor activities like biking, hiking, and running. Other than that, I spend lots of time with close friends and family.

Brendan Sheehan, Corporate Recruiter

BrendanSWhat do you do in your position at the recruiting office? I am the corporate recruiter for our Architectural Products Group (APG). I work on the exempt level positions for seven of our regional companies in both the U.S. and Canada. I support the western region, as well as the northeast and Texas.

When did you join Oldcastle?
I started with Oldcastle in January of 2015.

Where is your job located?
All of the recruiting efforts for Oldcastle in North America are centralized in our offices in Rochester, NY.

What are the best parts of your job?
The people in the organization.  Even though we are the largest building materials manufacturer in North America, the company has a very blue collar feel to it. The management, from the regional presidents, to the local sales and operations managers, are all very accessible and very open. The needs for each Oldcastle company and region can vary, so having that open communication with numerous levels within the organization is a huge asset for us in the recruiting center.

Recruiterofthequarter

Brendan receiving ‘Recruiter of the Quarter’ Award 2016

What do you like about working here?
Getting to know the hiring managers and really being able to get a feel for their local needs. Like I mentioned, Oldcastle has a great culture of openness and working together for the greater good of the company. I love being able to get a real understanding of what we are trying to accomplish, both in business and as a leader in the building materials industry.

How would coworkers describe you?  Hopefully they would say that I’m a hardworking, fun-loving guy and team player. I try to bring a positive attitude into the work place.

What was your first job ever?
My first job was working at Silver Stadium where the Rochester Red Wings play. I worked the grill that was on a deck down the 3rd base line. It was right next to the visiting team’s bullpen, so I would talk with the players while I was setting up for the game.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories?
We went to the National Sales Meeting in Nashville in 2015. This was at the Gaylord Opryland Resort.  There are nine acres of indoor gardens there, a river flowing through it and waterfalls. It took 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other! It was a great event – especially getting to meet over 200 people on the teams we work with all over the country.

Tell us about your family.
My mom lives in Rochester in the same town as I do, and my brother lives just outside of Philadelphia with his wife, my niece and nephew. He has three books published, and is the food editor for Philadelphia Magazine. We all like to travel, and both my brother and I have lived out west on a couple of occasions.

shirttieWhat do you do in your position?
I work with our Architectural Products Group, a division of Oldcastle that produces materials like paver blocks, decorative stones and mulches.  I help find talented folks for non-exempt roles within our production facilities like forklift drivers, machine operators, maintenance mechanics, administrative workers, and more.

When did you join Oldcastle?
I started in January of 2016

Where is your job located?
Our office is in Rochester, NY, but I work with locations spread throughout the country – mostly with our Midwest and Southwest divisions.

What do you like about working here?
Our team here is fantastic! Working alongside such a creative and dedicated group of people each day motivates me to be better.

What are the best parts of your job?
No two days are exactly the same. I enjoy that each day will present me with a new challenge. Plus, I get to talk with interesting people from all over the country.

What would co-workers say about you?
I hope they’d say I’m friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. And probably say that I’m not very good at shooting darts.

What was your first job ever?
Rick’s Deli – pizza maker and delivery guy. I’ve come a long way since then!

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories to share?
When I was managing a flooring retail store, I was the only one willing (or dumb) enough to drive our over-sized home show display 90 miles in a packed 26’ Box truck to Buffalo for their show, which started the following week. If that ride wasn’t bad enough, when they flagged me to pull INSIDE the convention center to unload, the look on my face must have been hilarious. I was sweating bullets…it gave me new respect for anyone driving a big rig! But I did it all without putting a scratch on the truck.

Tell us about your family.
I grew up in Auburn, a small town just outside of Syracuse, NY. Most of my family still lives local to the area. I have two younger brothers, and two adorable nieces. I moved to the Rochester area about 8 years ago, where I live with my wife Heather and our fat lazy cat named Cheeto.

Jennifer Friday, Staffing Administrator

IMG_3132What do you do in your position?
I am a Staffing Administrator in the recruiting office. I assist the recruiters by sending out offer packets, reviewing background and drug screening results, and making sure that the candidate has completed all the paperwork that is necessary before they start in their new position at Oldcastle. I also help candidates with any questions they have about the new hire  process.

When did you join Oldcastle?
December 2015

Where is your job located?
The recruiting office in Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here?
I like working here because I like being able to help candidates. There is a time frame of about one to two weeks where I am able to communicate with the candidate and get to know them. It is always wonderful to have someone call and tell you that a recruiter you are working with is great, that our office is very responsive,  and how excited they are to start.  Being able to answer questions and talk to the candidates can help diminish the anxiety of starting a new job. There have even been a few times when candidates have emailed me after their first day just to tell me how well it went.

What are the best parts of your job?
The best part is the people that I work with every day. Everyone is so nice, helpful, and approachable.

What would co-workers say about you?
They would say that I am the lady that sits at the new front desk that had been empty for awhile, that I still startle them when they come in. But besides that, I think they would say that I am quiet, helpful and friendly.

Tell us about your family.
My wonderful husband, Rick, and I have been together since we were eighteen. We like to travel, go to sporting events, and go to concerts. We have two beautiful daughters, Fiona (11) and Naomi (5). This year, Fiona started sixth grade in the Middle School. She loves to play soccer, participates in Odyssey of the Mind (an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students), plays trombone, and was selected to sing with the All County Choir. She has accomplished so much, is on high honor roll, and we are very proud of her. Naomi started kindergarten this year, which was very tough on me, but she absolutely loves it. She also plays soccer and does really well in school. We are so proud of her, and love her nonstop sense of humor. Our family also consists of three cats, one dog, and two fish.

What was your first job ever?
The first job that I had was cleaning the Allied offices just down the road. I would work from 7 am to 11 am every Saturday sweeping, vacuuming and mopping. It was pretty easy, but waking up early on a Saturday as a teenager was not my favorite thing to do!
