I am a Corporate Recruiter for Oldcastle.  This position requires me to post new job opportunities on our company website as well as a number of external job boards.  I review all candidate resumes submitted, and select the best talent for phone interviews.  I then conduct interviews and forward top performers to Hiring Managers at Oldcastle facilities all over the United States.

When did you join Oldcastle? I started late October, 2016

Where is your job located? I work at the Oldcastle Recruiting Center in Rochester, NY.

What do you like about working here?  First and foremost, it’s the people.  My coworkers are a wonderful group of talented people who work together and are willing to help one another.  As a “new guy,” it has been great to feel welcome and to have a tremendous amount of experience to lean on as I get acclimated to my new role.  Our leaders, Chris and Corey, have truly done a great job building a strong team.

What are the best parts of your job? I think the best part of the job is being in a position to help people earn gainful employment with a great company.  As a recruiter, I take pride in helping others find job opportunities and a means to support themselves and their families.

What was your first job ever?
My first job was caddying at a local golf course.   

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories? I have many, but probably nothing that can be shared publicly.

What do you do outside of work? I love spending time with my wife, my family and friends.  I play a lot of golf, enjoy traveling, cooking, watching sports (especially football), taking our dog out for walks, spending time at the lake with my wife’s family and hanging out with my buddies.matt-cliffs-of-moher

4 Career Resolutions You Can Keep in 2017

2016 to 2017, happy new year conceptWell, here we are again. A fresh slate, a new calendar. Ready to make the most of this year for your career? Great! Let’s get started.

  1. Vow to update your LinkedIn page
    Be honest now. When was the last time you updated your LinkedIn profile? Set aside an hour. You want to go through and make additions and deletions as necessary. Have you taken on any new projects? Are there new success stories you could add? Don’t just reiterate your resume! Add “wow factor” content that a recruiter or hiring manager would be impressed to read. LinkedIn allows for photos, video and links too – take advantage of the multimedia possibilities. When you’re done updating, show it to a friend or family member and ask them how it looks, what makes sense, and what could still use some sprucing up. When you’re done with that, you need to do the same thing for your resume.
  2. Start an accomplishment list
    It’s easy to forget all the projects you’ve completed over the year. Yet, you can really stand out when you have this arsenal of good stuff to draw from (for your resume, cover letter and interview). If you jot down your successes and projects you’ve worked on as they happen (once a week is a good goal), this will help when it comes time to interview. Start – right now – to keep track of your results. This way you won’t have to back track or try to remember something you worked on months ago. This list can also be helpful for your yearly performance review.
  3. Show your references some love
    You do have a list of at least three references that you could use, right? Never underestimate the importance of a good reference. Create your list and then make sure to keep in touch with your references – not just when you need them. In addition, make sure your reference has a copy of your resume and prep them if you think they will be called. At the very least, send them the job description and 2 or 3 points/characteristics you want them to emphasize.
  4. Start a career ‘Content calendar.’
    Marketers and writers often schedule out topics and themes by day, week and/or month. This could be based on the season, holidays or a number of other factors related to the industry/field they are working in. You can do the same – whether you’re job searching or just focusing on your career. Break it up by season to get started. What do you hope to accomplish this first quarter? For instance – January through March could be – Resume/Cover letter updating, April though June – networking/submitting applications, July through September – attend an industry conference/seminar, etc.

Don’t stay stuck in a job just because you don’t want to put in the work and effort required for a successful job search. These tips don’t take a lot of time, but can yield good results. Good luck on your career journey in 2017!

6 Strategies To Cope With Post Holiday Blues

Empty road to upcoming 2017 against the big cloudsThe first week back to work after the holidays can be rough. The next vacation or holiday feel a million miles away. So, what can you do to make things more pleasant?

1) Ease back into your routine

The months before the holidays are usually a flurry of activity. Getting back into the grind of working feels somewhat ‘off’. Don’t pressure yourself to be perfectly back on schedule. Give yourself a few weeks to get back into the swing of things.

2) Resolve to not resolve

January brings with it societal/personal pressure to make and keep New Year’s resolutions. Certainly, getting fit, losing weight, saving money, etc. are admirable goals. The problem is – 71% of people fall off the New Year’s Resolution wagon the first two weeks. Cut yourself some slack and don’t try to do everything at once. You aren’t going to go from binging on Christmas cookies for weeks to being satisfied with just carrots. Set goals, but start small. For instance, “this week I will bring fresh fruit as a snack instead of going to the vending machine every afternoon.”

3) Create a “look forward to” date

Having something on the calendar to anticipate can really help on those days when you’re dragging. Think about the last time you planned a vacation. Half the fun isn’t the vacation itself – it’s the time planning, talking about it and reminiscing after. Your event doesn’t have to break the bank either. Sign up for a cooking class, buy tickets to a concert or sporting event, make a reservation for a new restaurant, etc. Pick something fun and meaningful to you.

4) Perception is everything

For most of the country, the weather is cold, gloomy and dark. Going to work and driving home in the dark can take a toll. However, it’s all in the way you look at it. December 21st (the first day of Winter) was the shortest day of the year. We actually gain sunlight from that day forward. Counting down until Spring is a start to putting the reality into perspective. Try this countdown calculator. Use it to count down until Spring and/or the next fun thing you have planned.

5) Commit to self care

You’ve heard it before, but it bears repeating. Proper sleep and a good diet make a world of difference in your mood. Stop surfing the web and checking your phone an hour before bedtime. Disconnect, relax and make time to wind down at the end of every day. Even going to be 15 minutes earlier can make a difference.

6) Wallowing allowed (in moderation)

There are plenty of perky self-help articles that encourage embracing everything about the new year and a fresh start. However, if you’re feeling guilty about being blue, reading those essays can make you feel even worse. It’s OK to not jump for joy about being back to work after the holidays. Those feelings are normal. All you need are the strategies to get back into the work groove. If you continue to feel down after a few weeks, you may want to talk to someone. For most people though, you can make minor adjustments in your life to get past this.

A Recipe For Job Search Success

cookieWith a little luck and a dollop of determination, you can cook up a great career for the New Year.

1) What jobs are you going to apply to?
Broaden your search parameters. Check out the  Occupational Outlook Handbook: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/ This site identifies and describes almost every occupation you could imagine. It even includes education required and median pay. Another idea: When you go to the job boards – instead of always typing in the same job title – look for other titles. In addition, keep an open mind when you see the suggested jobs LinkedIn shows in your feed. There could be jobs out there that you’re qualified for that you hadn’t even thought of previously. Oh, and this same tip applies on the baking front too. Are you going to make cookies this year? Or maybe it’s pie? Sure, make those old favorites – but give new treats a try too!

2) Stir in two cups of patience
Any good baker knows that you can’t open the oven door when cookies or cakes are baking. It can be tempting to sneak a peek or poke at those cupcakes. However, the wait is worth the while. The same thing holds true for your job search. This is particularly true in December. Job search activity on all fronts slows to what seems like a crawl. You have to rise above the impatience and know that things will pick up again. January is just around the corner. Always keep your eyes open for positions, keep applying and be prepared for more activity in early 2017.

cupcakes3) Sprinkle in a pinch of creativity
Don’t be a cookie cutter candidate! On your end, what else you can do to differentiate yourself? Can you start a blog in your field? Is there a new networking group or conference you can attend? You want to stand out! While you do need to follow the rules when it comes to submitting applications, you can think and act outside the box too. Is the recruiter for the role on Twitter? Does the company have a careers Facebook page? There are other less obvious ways to reach out and differentiate yourself. For you bakers out there – we all know that the best recipes aren’t 100% by the book. You follow the directions to a point, but then add in your own special seasonings or alter the original. The results? Delish! Put that same strategy in play when you’re on the prowl for a position.

4) Don’t forget to add a dash of of love
You can always tell when a recipe has been made with love. The baker is passionate and excited about what they’re creating. Have you lost that excitement? It can be a challenge to maintain enthusiasm – especially for a job search that seems to be never ending. But, you have to find that inner strength to tap back into a better frame of mind. Interviewers (in person or on the phone) can tell when you’re just going through the motions. Even if you have to “fake it ’til you make it,” you need to do just that. Smile, think about the satisfaction of landing that job and what it will feel like to start a new adventure.

What do you like about working here?  My coworkers!  They have helped me so much since  day one, and they are still helping me to this day.  I’m pretty grateful to be a part of the team.

What are the best parts of your job? The best part of my job is building a relationship with the mangers that I’m working with in different states.  Getting to know them better, understanding what they are looking for in a candidate, and learning a little bit more  about the group that I’m supporting.

What would co-workers say about you?  I hope they would say that I’m funny, a hard worker, a bad singer, and helpful.

What was your first job ever? My first job was working at Aramark at the Monroe County Jail right out of high school. I was a line cook, and I mainly cooked food on a flattop grill for the Deputy Sheriffs.

4 Ways To Alleviate Holiday Job Search Anxiety

Does your job search have you feeling a bit Grinch-like? Don’t despair!

Did you know?

According to the most recent Bureau Of Labor statistics Job Openings & Labor Turnover Survey report released today, there are over 5.5 million job openings in the U.S.

So, how can you land one of these jobs – especially when many companies are ramping down for holiday breaks and most of us are consumed with decorating, baking, shopping and planning/attending holiday festivities?

1) Acknowledge Take a step back to realize that this is a challenging time of the year to be looking for work. Re-frame how you approach your employment journey.

“Don’t think of a job search as a “job search.” That sounds depressing, hard and like you don’t have any ownership of it. Think of it as a “job campaign.” You’re out there, campaigning to get in with a company that is a good fit for you. A simple change in mindset makes it more personalized, relevant and goal oriented.” Geoff Bieber, Driver Recruiter

2) Accept Take back your power by realizing that the job search during this final month of the year will be harder. Knowing this upfront is half the battle.

“Try to turn your negative thoughts into positive self talk. Yes, many businesses aren’t actively interviewing due to manager vacation time and the new year approaching. However, you can still keep up your search. Instead, switch more of your focus onto revamping your resume and cover letter. A large part of a job search isn’t simply submitting resumes and networking, it’s researching how to present yourself better and stand out above the rest. ” Jennifer Latone, Operations Recruiter

3) Accommodate Be willing to alter your schedule and expectations. Can you rearrange your schedule to go in for an interview earlier or later in the day – or even on a weekend? Or, be willing to schedule it much further out on the calendar. The more flexible you can be, the better your chances are for success. The good news is that you are competing with fewer candidates during the 4th quarter, and this already puts you ahead of the game.

“Give yourself a time frame. You may not get an interview or phone screen scheduled right now, but that doesn’t mean you won’t get one. Stay organized and be ready to embark on your search full force come January. The second week of January is a great target date for scheduling interviews, as managers will be catching up that first week immediately after New Year’s.” – Courtney Vena, Corporate Recruiter

4) Align What exactly do you hope to get out of your job search this season? Temper expectations with reality. It’s unlikely you’re going to have multiple job interviews in December, especially the closer we get to the Christmas and New Year’s break. But, it’s not unrealistic to expect to set up interviews going into mid January. You could also make goals that aren’t dependent on your target company. For example, make a goal to set up an informational interview in January, update your LinkedIn by the end of December, create a reference sheet, etc.

Looking for a job any time of year is stressful, but holidays can add an extra layer of pressure. However, don’t let this discourage you! Be proactive, patient and take some time to enjoy family and friends too.

5 Job Search Trends To Be Thankful For

According to Jobvite’s 2016 Social Recruiting Survey,  78% of recruiters cite enthusiasm as influencing their hiring decision, followed by a command of requirements (76%) and conversation skills (73%).

It’s not just how strong your qualifications are on paper, it’s how you communicate those in the interview and online.

In addition, recruiters and hiring managers are  increasingly using social sites to vet candidates.  It goes both ways as well. Besides LinkedIn, savvy job seekers know they can research and reach out to companies via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – even Snapchat. If you aren’t maximizing your presence on social media, you’re missing out on potential opportunities.

Posting “selfies” is now considered less controversial. 18% of recruiters view them negatively (compared to 25% in 2015).

2) The power of the passive candidate
Good employees currently employed are highly sought after by other employers. If you’re one of these employees, you’re already at an advantage during the job search process. Use this edge to seek out a better role, title or more pay in the new year.

3) The importance of the high touch candidate experience
Think about your last interview experience – from initial phone contact to interview to offer packet to first day. How do you feel it went? A goal should always be to find companies that value new hires and treat them accordingly. The way a candidate is onboarded, from beginning to end, is critical. Companies who understand this, and implement processes that show they welcome and care about their candidates, have greater long-term employee satisfaction and retention.

Companies need to make sure this process is an intuitive and seamless experience. Candidates also need to be aware that online applications are also on the rise. This means that you must use the right keywords on your resume and in your cover letter to stand out against other qualified candidates. It’s not easy or an exact science, and the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) isn’t perfect. However, you can differentiate yourself from your competition by branding, employer research and connecting with recruiters and hiring managers at your target companies.

5) Employment Branding Has Never Been More Important
Just as job seekers need to brand themselves, employers need to showcase that they are an employer of choice. You’ll see continued emphasis on up-to-date websites, social media and other channels (newsletters, Talent Communities, blogs) as employers invest in promoting their brand to candidates.

Should You Keep Up Your Job Search Over The Holidays?

availableforworkWith the holidays looming, it can be easy to postpone your job search. Many people do just that, for numerous reasons including:
1) Why bother? No one is hiring now
2) I might as well enjoy the festivities
3) I’ll make a fresh start in January
While these sentiments are commonplace, they aren’t doing you any favors. Adjust your thinking and activities to give  you the best chance for job search success.

Hiring activity may slow during the fourth quarter, but it doesn’t stop.  Employers are still actively looking for employees.

Don’t be scared to continue your search in November and beyond. While some managers may be off for vacation, others are available. Schedules slow down, allowing you a better opportunity to connect with them over the phone or in person. While other job seekers postpone their search, you put yourself at the forefront.  You want to be in the front of the line  – not playing catch up in January. Put yourself ahead of the competition! Even unhappy employees often hold off on their job search until they receive that raise or bonus in the New Year. If you’re in that category, don’t do it – that puts you even more behind.

No matter the month, employers still have positions to fill. Even cyclical businesses that aren’t hiring now are open to building a pipeline of candidates for when they’re needed. Your goal is to make sure your name and resume are at the top of that pile. Job openings don’t take a holiday. People quit, resign or are fired no matter what month is on the calendar.

No one is asking you to skip that holiday party or time with family.  What we are saying however, is to continue working on your resume, researching companies and applying for openings. Alter your schedule to coincide with the festivities.  Make time to fit in job search activities. You don’t have to put in the hours you put in before towards your search, but don’t abandon it completely. Even one hour a week is better than nothing.

Take advantage of informal networking opportunities. You hear it all the time – it’s all about who you know. Mix and mingle at those holiday parties! Networking isn’t just limited to formal, business related events. You’re also apt to catch people more relaxed. Who knows – your next job could come from a tip from your sister in law’s best friend. You just never know. Of course, this also comes with a caveat – this is not the time for the hard sell. However, be open and willing to engage with people.

Step up your social media game
Are you posting helpful links related to your industry? Have you given LinkedIn self publishing a try? People on LinkedIn are eager for content to like, share and comment on. You should also be active on that network. Think people don’t check LinkedIn over the holidays? Think again. Social media activity often increases when people need need a break after a little too much family time.

Adopt an attitude of gratitude. We couldn’t close this post without reflecting on what the holiday season is all about. Gratitude does play a part in the job search. A good attitude, combined with hard work, luck and a little timing will be what it takes to land a new job.

Are You Too Scared To Look For A New Job?

Listen, we get it. It can be hard to to put yourself out there. Let’s address some common job search fears and how you can move past them.

  1. The Fear of Change
    This is a big one. Even if you’re in a toxic work environment, leaving to start a new job is inherently stressful. All big moves are stressful – even good ones – like getting married, buying a house, going away to school, etc. Accept that leaving the comfort zone of your current position is going to cause emotional discomfort. This is part of the process. Not feeling at least a little apprehension would be more atypical.

    It’s so easy to keep postponing your job search.” Oh, I’ll wait until after the holidays, after the kids get a little older, after ‘INSERT YOUR EXCUSE HERE’. Don’t do it. Life moves quickly, and, before you know it, we’ll be in the midst of the new year. Combat this obstacle by charting out your job search plan now. It can be as simple as drafting and following a plan: October – work on resume and LinkedIn page for a half hour on Wednesday and Thursday nights, search for jobs for a half hour on Monday and Tuesday nights, November – attend one networking event, get references lined up. You get the idea…
  2. Not understanding the process 
    If you haven’t searched for a job for awhile (or even if you have), you’ll soon realize that the process itself has changed. Completing online applications is commonplace. These ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) have their own set of rules. It’s imperative that you format your resume with keywords to increase your chances of the system making a match. Along the same lines though, good old fashioned job search rules still apply. You need to emphasize your accomplishments on your resume, as well as in an interview. The competition has never been fiercer, but knowing how to position yourself appropriately is half the battle.
  3. Thinking The Grass ISN’T Greener
    If you’ve ever left one bad job for another one, you may resist making a change again. However, if you don’t take a chance, you’ll never know! Yes, there is always the chance the next job may not live up to its potential. But, this is where your research comes in. Make sure to thoroughly research the company as best you can before you accept the offer.
    Besides perusing all their social media, look to see if you have any mutual connections or friends who know people who work there. ASK probing questions – for instance – What would people say is the best and worst thing about working here? If you could improve something in the office, what would it be?  LOOK for clues when you’re at the interview. Do people seem engaged and energetic or appear apathetic? What you hear (or don’t hear), see (or don’t see), can all be very telling. Be a detective so you don’t get burned.

At the end of the day, it’s a personal decision whether you make the decision to stay or to go. As they say though, no risk, no rewards. Fight through your fears and go for that new job!

Jennifer Latone, Driver Recruiter

jl5What do you do in your position? I am a Driver Recruiter for Allied Building Products, the distribution division of Oldcastle.  My focus is to identify talented CDL drivers across the states to join our team delivering both interior and exterior building products locally to our customers.

When did you join Oldcastle? August 2016

Where is your job located?  Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here?  So far, it’s absolutely the team here! Everyone is so supportive and friendly. It seems that everyone really enjoys what they do and works hard to achieve their goals. It’s pretty awesome to be working with like-minded people.

What are the best parts of your job? What I really like about Oldcastle is that I’m not trying to fill temporary positions like some of my previous recruiting work. Being able to help a person find stable employment with a successful company makes me feel good. The fact that it’s so easy to “sell” a company that treats its employees awesome, has great benefits, and so much room for growth makes it not feel like a “sell” at all.

What would co-workers say about you? Can anyone ever answer this question? Ha, ha! Well, I would think they probably would say that I have a positive attitude and always do my best. They may say that I’m a bit of a joker filled with useless information too, lol.

What was your first job ever? I think I was 14/15 and I worked at my local pizzeria – LB’s Pizza in Lima, NY. I’d get up super early on the weekend and go in to do all the prep work for the day.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories? Let’s see…one time I had a little fender bender on the way to work, and, just as I pulled up in front of my job, my whole engine went up in flames! They had to evacuate the building until the fire department came because it might have exploded. That was pretty interesting and super embarrassing!

What do you do outside of work? I love to spend time with my mom and two sisters most of all. I am often doing some sort of experimental cooking and love learning anything new. Most of the time, I am just spoiling my cat Ludo, binge watching Netflix, or have my nose in a good book, lol. I’m a bit of a homebody.

Would you like to share anything about your family?  We are mostly a family of girls, and yet we are more mechanically inclined than most. My (tiny) big sister was a mechanic for GM for years, and I took schooling for building mechanics just so we could be self-sufficient and not have to call anyone to fix anything. I have to say that it has turned out to be a pretty handy thing.

Bonus fun fact: Both my mother and big sister were born in Japan, and I could use chopsticks before regular silverware. 🙂
