Brendan Sheehan, Senior Corporate Recruiter

BrendanSWhat do you do in your position at the recruiting office? I am a Senior Corporate Recruiter for our Architectural Products Group (APG). I work on the exempt level positions for seven of our regional companies in both the U.S. and Canada. I support the western region, as well as the northeast and Texas.

When did you join Oldcastle?
I started with Oldcastle in January of 2015.

Where is your job located?
All of the recruiting efforts for Oldcastle in North America are centralized in our offices in Rochester, NY.

What are the best parts of your job?
The people in the organization.  Even though we are the largest building materials manufacturer in North America, the company has a very blue collar feel to it. The management, from the regional presidents, to the local sales and operations managers, are all very accessible and very open. The needs for each Oldcastle company and region can vary, so having that open communication with numerous levels within the organization is a huge asset for us in the recruiting center.

What do you like about working here?
Getting to know the hiring managers and really being able to get a feel for their local needs. Like I mentioned, Oldcastle has a great culture of openness and working together for the greater good of the company. I love being able to get a real understanding of what we are trying to accomplish, both in business and as a leader in the building materials industry.

How would coworkers describe you?  Hopefully they would say that I’m a hardworking, fun-loving guy and team player. I try to bring a positive attitude into the work place.

What was your first job ever?
My first job was working at Silver Stadium where the Rochester Red Wings play. I worked the grill that was on a deck down the 3rd base line. It was right next to the visiting team’s bullpen, so I would talk with the players while I was setting up for the game.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories?
We went to the National Sales Meeting in Nashville in 2015. This was at the Gaylord Opryland Resort.  There are nine acres of indoor gardens there, a river flowing through it and waterfalls. It took 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other! It was a great event – especially getting to meet over 200 people on the teams we work with all over the country.

Tell us about your family.
My mom lives in Rochester in the same town as I do, and my brother lives just outside of Philadelphia with his wife, my niece and nephew. He has three books published, and is the food editor for Philadelphia Magazine. We all like to travel, and both my brother and I have lived out west on a couple of occasions.

Erin Bardwell, Staffing Manager

erinbardwellWhat do you do in your position?
I work as a Staffing Manager for the Architectural Products Group (APG) & Precast.

What month/year did you start?
I originally started in January of 2006 with Allied Building Products (Distribution Division) as a Corporate Recruiter.

Where is your job located?

The job is located in Rochester, NY.

What do you like about working here?
When I started here in 2006, I immediately enjoyed working and supporting the hiring managers within this organization.  Every time I picked up the phone and talked to them, I always asked about their history with Oldcastle. I’m always amazed by the tenure they’ve had and how they’ve “grown up” in the company.  In my line of work, it’s not often you see so much tenure with an employee’s work. It’s a rarity these days, but, in this organization, it’s tried and true!

What are the best parts of your job?
I enjoy ensuring we get the best talent placed in the roles we have open.  I also enjoy watching the candidates placed get promoted over time. I love to see their career progression that gives them tenure and stability!

Additionally, I enjoy being able to get out and visit the management teams around the U.S. Going on plant tours is a real treat. I see first hand how much hard work and dedication goes into what we do every day.

Why do you think Oldcastle is a good place to work?
This company is built with hard working, competitive individuals who want to produce the best product to go out to our customers. When I visit the plants, I can see that.  It makes me proud to work for Oldcastle!

How would your co-workers describe you?
I would think that my co-workers would say that I am very loyal to Oldcastle and that I love this company!  I have to love working here, as I sell the company to people over the phone every day!  I’m very committed to what we’re doing here at the Recruiting Center, and am passionate about bringing in talent that will grow and flourish.

Erin on the farm!

Just for fun, we want to know – what was your 1st job ever?
I know one of my co-workers will get a big kick out of this, as he used to hear me talk about it all the time when we were in the same office together. I grew up on a 350-acre farm with about 100 dairy cows.  Now, I will be honest and say that I wasn’t necessarily bailing hay and taking care of the cows, but, as a little girl, I had the very important job of riding the tractors with my grandfather and father to make sure we were on track for the day!

Do you have any funny or interesting work stories to share?
When I first started working here, I fell in love with every candidate I talked to. I believe that was because I was so incredibly excited to work for an organization like this, having grown up in a more blue collar family.  I want to share with others how great this organization really is, so I am constantly recruiting, no matter where I am.

One other story – on my first trip out to visit an Allied Building Products branch in Rhode Island, I accidentally went into our competitor’s branch, unbeknownst to me.  Sounds silly, I know, but when we acquire companies, we don’t always change the original name on the outside of the branch. Due to that, I walked in all excited and asked for the Branch Manager. When they looked at me very puzzled, I realized that I was in the wrong place!  I backed up quickly and got out of there as fast as I could, lol!

If you want, tell us about your family.
I have an 8-year old daughter, Addison, who keeps me very busy when she is with me.  She’s in the 2nd grade, and we have plenty of homework to do each night. She also enjoys being outdoors.  She currently takes English style horse riding lessons, and I am so proud to see her tackle every lesson she has.  Addison also enjoys skiing. It’s something we do together as many weekends as we can in the winter months.

What are your hobbies?
I am very active outside of work because I enjoy the outdoors so much!  I ski, golf, play volleyball, ride my 4-wheeler, swim and bike ride.  I recently tackled Gore Mountain, and went down a double black diamond…slowly, but I did it!

What do you do in your position?
I’m the Staffing Administrator for the recruiting office here at Oldcastle. Most of what I do is onboarding of our new hires – from sending offer packets and reviewing their new hire paperwork to running background checks, coordinating drug screens, answering questions from our hires and ultimately ensuring that the hiring process runs smoothly after the recruiter gives them their employment offer. I do this for many groups that fall under Oldcastle – Allied Building Products, Precast, Architectural Products Group (APG), Building Envelope (OBE) etc. The remainder of my duties include providing administrative support to the recruiters and staffing managers in our office.

What month/year did you start?
I started in June of 2014.

Where is your job located?
It is located in Rochester, NY.

What do you like about working here?
I like knowing that I make a direct impact on someone’s life. Taking that leap of faith from one job to another is huge – and I pride myself in making sure that the hire feels welcomed and supported, and that the hiring process is a positive and efficient one for all involved. I am excited to get to know a hire during the process and often hear back from them after they are hired, and they tell me how happy they are. That is why I do what I do.

What are the best parts of your job?
Every day is different. I’m always learning something new and it is a very busy position. I’m never at a loss for finding something to do. The time goes by quickly!

Why do you think Oldcastle is a good place to work?
It’s really great to work with so many forward-thinking colleagues. I’m excited to see the many projects that we are currently working on in order to create more efficiencies in our processes. I’m also inspired by the dedication that I see on a daily basis from the team that I work with. I’m humbled to be a part of it.

How would your coworkers describe you?
Hopefully, they would say that I am  funny, positive and a hard-worker.

buildingDo you have any funny or interesting work stories to share?
For many years, I worked on a college campus at the University of Washington. One of the oldest buildings on campus used to be a brothel over a century ago. So, you can imagine my grandmother’s horror when I told her that I worked at a brothel!

If you would like, tell us about your family
I’m a proud mother of my daughter Jasmine. Special shout-out to my parents, including my mother (a two-time cancer fighter), and my sister.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I recently became a homeowner, so I find most of my days are spent doing DIY projects. I also love to travel, cook and go to the movies.

Just for fun, we want to know – what was your first job ever?
I worked with my best friend at a local motel cleaning the rooms. You can imagine why we didn’t last long.
