Jason Herrman, Engineering Manager

jhWhat division do you work for?
Oldcastle Precast

What do you do in your position?
I get to help our company succeed. I work on a variety of large-scale projects and projects that have national products in them, while my team handles the engineering and drafting.  I am also lucky to help out other locations when they are overwhelmed or need some help to get through a difficult time.

When did you join Oldcastle? January of 2012

Where is your job located?
I am lucky – my job is located in beautiful, sunny Colorado!  I have the privilege of working on projects located all over the country.

Can you describe your career progression here?
I started as an EIT (Engineer in Training) after getting my masters.  As an EIT, I helped out doing designs for some of our locations. I started getting involved in product development and worked on several products, which led to helping our sales team with engineering.  While working to support the sales team, my team expanded and our portfolio of work also expanded. We developed more products, and continue to support in any way we can. That is how I got to where I am now.

Christmas 055What do you like about working here?
Great people. Great location. Great company. Oldcastle is a solid company with lots of room for growth. There are endless possibilities within the company and our parent company, CRH. I enjoy the job I do and have a great work/life balance.

What are the best parts of your job?
I get to be involved in really unique and large scale projects. We are challenged to come up with new ideas and new ways of turning a cast-in-place concrete design to a precast concrete design. This often requires critical thinking and can be quite a challenge.

Have you worked on any unique, high profile or interesting projects?
Yes. You can see here (above) some photos of a few very complex and large vaults that we designed and produced. I also developed a ballistic wall product line.

What advice would give for an Engineer who wants to work for us? Why should they choose Oldcastle?
Precast Concrete is not boring! It is fun work with lots of responsibility and lots of variety, and it’s founded in a company that treats you well and offers a lot of growth opportunities.

Is there anything else you want to share about yourself?
I lived in Sudan for a couple of years doing non-profit work building a school. It is what led me to study structural engineering and gave me lots of experience with concrete.

Resume Tips From a Recruiter

We recently asked Joel Burris, a Corporate Recruiter for Allied Building Products for his advice on resumes. Joel looks at hundreds of resumes weekly. Check out these two short clips to hear what he has to say.

How long does a recruiter spend looking at a resume?

You want yours to be the first. Yes, there are times they go back to the pile – but who wants to be second place?

Resume tips recap:

  1. Make sure it’s streamlined and flows easily.
  2. Use bullets to keep it organized.
  3. It doesn’t have to be fancy – no need for photos, charts or graphs.
  4. Use a timeline format.
  5. Gaps in your work history? Provide a brief explanation as to why.
  6. Two page resumes are ok. One is fine too. Three is too much.

How can you stand apart from a pool of similar candidates?

How to stand out recap:
1) Show enthusiasm
Be excited about the opportunity and be willing to have an upbeat conversation.
2) Do a little bit of research
Learn about the company and job, including the competitors of the company.
3) Be able to articulate accomplishments at your last job
Tell stories and give examples – don’t just describe duties.

Chris Garrie, VP of Recruiting

ChrisGarrieOldcastleWhat do you do in your position?
I am fortunate to lead the talent acquisition effort for the Oldcastle family of companies across North America.

When did you join Oldcastle?
January 2005

Where is your job located? Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here? There are many reasons why I like working for Oldcastle.  First, it is a very successful global conglomerate in the building material manufacturing/distribution space that is always looking for better ways to do business.  Second, the people (from top to bottom in the organization) are bright, approachable and genuinely care about the company, customers, fellow employees and the community.

Chrisbobduffy

Chris with Rochester Chamber of Commerce President Robert Duffy after a tour of our office this fall

What are the best parts of your job?
I get to work with the best recruiting team in Rochester.  We also help people find a career with a stable, profitable company that values the contributions made by each and every employee.

What would co-workers say about you?
I hope that they would say that I care very much about our team and Oldcastle.

Can you share any funny or interesting work stories from over the years?
When we first started to build out the recruitment effort in Rochester, we were sitting in some unused office space in our warehouse on Buffalo Road.  When we started to add staff to our team, we had to do everything possible to find space – including sitting people in old closets and conference rooms.  Mike Brigida (who ran the warehouse and is now a good friend) was very accommodating and allowed us to basically take over his office.  Since that time, we were fortunate to build a foundation that could apply to all of the Oldcastle companies. This has allowed us to grow this team so significantly over the past 11 years.  We are now in a true office on Scottsville Road,  but that wouldn’t have happened without the help and patience of many in our original building.

What was your first job ever?
I was a dishwasher at the local truck stop in Round Lake, NY

Tell us about your family.
I have been married to my wife Erin for 10 years. We have  two boys Kyle (8) and Ethan (4) and two dogs – Shelby and Ginger.

Do you have any hobbies?
Lately, I spend most of my spare time with my family shuttling my kids back and forth from the YMCA or reading.  I do try to get out for long bike rides when we have good weather.

Claire Tuck, Corporate Recruiter, Allied Building Products

ClaireTuckWhat do you do in your position?
I am a corporate recruiter for our Allied Building Products division.

When did you join Oldcastle?
August, 2015

Where is your job located?
My job is located in Rochester, New York, but I recruit for positions throughout the United States.

What do you like about working here?
I work with an amazing team who are always willing to help out! I love having the opportunity to work with such an outgoing, professional, and fun group of people who know what needs to be done in order to continue to help our company be successful.

What are the best parts of your job?
I like knowing that I am helping people find a career that they will love.

What would your co-workers say about you?
I think they would say that I’m someone who learns quickly and is a hard worker. On a lighter note, they would probably point out that I have a serious obsession with burrito bowls from Chipotle.

Can you share any funny or interesting work stories?
My background is mostly in education, and I come from a family of teachers. I went back and forth on what I really saw myself doing after I earned my degree in communications, and a few years later returned to school for my Master’s in childhood and special education. I had an opportunity, while working in a school located in one of Rochester’s suburbs, to be the assistant coach for the girls varsity basketball team, and loved every minute of it! Teaching and coaching my team, both on and off the court, was highly rewarding. I felt as though I was following in the footsteps of my father who had coached basketball for 25 years!

basketballWhat was your first job ever?
My first job was as a counselor/coach at an overnight basketball camp at Hobart William Smith College in Geneva, New York.  Basketball has always been a huge part of my life. I still help out with my sister’s varsity team from time to time.

crossfitDo you have any hobbies?
I’m really big into staying fit and healthy. About a year and a half ago, I started doing Crossfit, and have become really involved in the gym that I go to. The people that go to my gym are like a family to me, and keep me on my toes competitively. I couldn’t ask for a better group of people.

lunchesI also love cooking. At my previous job, I cooked lunch for myself and my coworkers, and I even started cooking for the people my fiancé worked with as well.

Tell us about your family.
I come from a pretty large family that includes a twin sister who is my best friend! I’m also getting married March 26th, 2015 which has been very exciting and keeping me busy.  We currently have two children, Dominic who is a lab/German Shepherd mix, and Parker who is a miniature dachshund.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     familyengagment2

Geoff Bieber, Lead Operations Recruiter

GeoffBWhat do you do in your position?
I source and screen driver candidates for our locations across the country. I try to get as many great candidates as I can so our branches can hire the best folks out there.

What month/year did you start?
I started June 30th (got in right before July 1st so I got an extra day off – thanks boss!)

Where is your job located?
I’m at 1200 Scottsville Road in beautiful, sunny Rochester, NY! (all sarcasm – although Rochester does have some good aspects, they don’t come out until May).

What do you like about working here?
I came from working for a small, non-profit company assisting people with their job search, to a huge, corporate entity. I didn’t know what to expect from the people I worked with, but the office mates that I have are awesome. I’m really blessed to have a great boss and staff around me that make coming to work something to look forward to every day.

What are the best parts of your job?
I like talking/communicating with our different branches throughout the country. I grew up all over the place – New York, California, and Oklahoma, so I love the diversity of being able to speak to folks from all over. All our branches are so down to earth and cool. Talking to guys like Ty Meyers in San Jose, to Troy Lubbers in Houston, to Mike Brigida right here in Rochester, makes my job really fun and different.

Why do you think Oldcastle is a good place to work?
The sheer size of the company makes it so exciting to work here. The opportunities that you have and the things that you can accomplish make it so amazing. I love that I can come into work, have an idea for getting new candidates for a job, and the organization fosters that idea and helps make it a reality.

How would your co-workers describe you?
What would they say about me to my face or behind my back? Hopefully, in BOTH cases, they would say that I’m a good guy who likes to have fun at his job but takes it seriously, makes a few jokes to make the day go by, and is a good person to bounce new ideas off of and collaborate with.

Just for fun, we want to know – what was your first job ever?
My first “real” job ever was working at Wal-Mart in the Hardware department. Did I know the difference between interior or exterior paint when I was 17? No, but they deemed me fit to work there because I was big and I could lift stuff for the customers.

bandDo you have any funny or interesting work stories to share?
I bartended for a nice hotel on the lake in Canandaigua, NY, when I was paying my way through college. One time, I was wrapping everything up for the night and, out of nowhere, Lynyrd Skynyrd (the band, not the dude) came in to the bar. I didn’t know what to expect. I thought things were going to get totally rowdy and out of control, but they were the nicest group of guys and gals ever. I talked to the late Billy Powell (the pianist) and one of the backup singers for hours. The band went through A LOT of Jack Daniels that night, but they gave me so much in tips it was well worth it. The next day, they told me to come to their concert, for free, in Syracuse. They left me 4 VIP tickets at will call, and I had another awesome night with my friends and the band. The rest of that story can’t be told via this medium, sorry.

If you would like, tell us about your family.
My Mom, who is retired, lives about 45 minutes away in little Newark, New York. My Dad, who is also retired, lives outside of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I also have a sister who lives outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma. She is the best special education teacher in the universe.

What are your hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy playing and watching sports, specifically basketball. I’m a huge video game nerd, so I’m always playing whatever the next big game for the Playstation is. I enjoy spending time with my friends and my beautiful girlfriend (who I wonder “Why is she dating me?” She’s much better looking than I am).

Amy Keenan, Corporate Recruiter, Allied Building Products

P1030383What do you do in your position?
I am a Corporate Recruiter for a great company, Allied Building Products.  Every day, I source the best talent for Inside/Outside Sales Professionals, IT and Management.  I mainly hone in on the Northeast, Great Lakes Region and the Florida area.

What month/year did you start?
I started with Allied on September 2, 2014. I remember the date exactly because I was so excited to come on board!

lilacsWhere is your job located?
My recruiting office is based out of Rochester, NY – which is known as the Flower City and for hosting the annual Lilac Festival.

What do you like about working here?
What I really enjoy about working at Allied is joining such a dedicated team of professionals in the office and working with the hiring managers as well.  The support that I receive is outstanding!

What are the best parts of your job?
The best parts – well, there are so many!  To narrow it down – I really love how our team works so well together and makes coming to work such a great experience.  Also, it’s exciting to move forward with the “right” talent and being able to offer the position of full-time employment.  I go home at the end of the day feeling AWESOME!

Why do you think Oldcastle is a good place to work?
We have people in the company who have such a passion for the building materials industry and believe in the products. This combination has made us so successful over the years.  We have so much to offer someone looking for not just a job but a career! I believe in the vision of Oldcastle – building a better tomorrow, and it begins with YOU!

How would your co-workers describe you?
Hmmm….I think that my co-workers would say: “Energetic, Passionate, Professional, Fun, Motivated, A Team Player and ANIMATED!”

P1000458

A Cumulus Cloud

Just for fun, we want to know – what was your first job ever?
My first job was something that I sought out. I became so interested in the weather during 8th grade, that I scheduled and conducted interviews with 3 different Meteorologists from the local news stations.  I was able to go into each news station to shadow and gain an understanding of what their job responsibilities entailed.  Then, I became a WeatherSpotter. It was an unpaid job, but certainly rewarding. I was responsible for reporting current temperature readings and conditions for my hometown. Sometimes, my name was stated on the air and, in that moment, I felt like a celebrity!

Do you have any funny or interesting work stories to share?
Let’s see…Some people may not know, but I worked at 13WHAM News (formerly known as WOKR TV 13) as a part-time Forecaster for 6 ½ years (mainly on the weekends) gathering data to create a forecast, updating the Weatherline (a line that the public could call into for a up-to-date forecast), updating the webpage, recording my forecast for local radio stations and the DOT.  It was a great job because, even if I was wrong, I still had a job!  When I was younger, I wanted to move out West to chase tornadoes…my family and friends thought that I was crazy!

If you would like, tell us about your family.
I am blessed to have such a wonderful, loving and supportive family!  I have two children- a son who is almost 9, and quite the Engineer.  He is always experimenting!  My daughter, who is 5 ½, is a ray of sunshine, full of energy and loves to dance.  And, I have a great husband, a Mechanical Engineer who puts up with me!

What are your hobbies outside of work?
Playing with my kids, camping, mowing the lawn, fishing, crafting and going on vacations with my family!
