Rise Above the Fog – 3 Tips To Be A Job Search Star

ballon

  1.  The Better Way to Use “Easy Apply” on LinkedIn
apply websiteApplying to a job via LinkedIn? Many times, you will see a button that  sends you right to the company website to apply. If that is the case, simply proceed and fill out and submit your information online.

easyapplyHowever, if you see the Easy Apply button, you only have the option of attaching and sending one file to the employer. Instead of just submitting your resume, write your cover letter on page one and then add your resume on the second page of your word document. Save this cover letter and resume document as ONE file. Most people won’t think to do this. It’s a great way to get attention among dozens, if not hundreds of other applications you’re competing against.

2) Write your cover letter like a real person
Imagine you’re a recruiter or hiring manager reviewing job applications all day. They see the same boring, formal, cookie cutter introductions and content like this:
“I became aware of this opportunity through your web page.”
or “I’m a detail oriented professional with expertise in…”
On the surface, there is nothing wrong with these sentences. But, they are repetitive, redundant and state the obvious.

You don’t need to be a professional writer to craft your cover letter in a more interesting and appealing way.

For example, here’s sample copy for a mechanic opening. It reads more like a conversation. Don’t be afraid to inject a bit of your personality in your cover letter. Read it back to yourself and have someone else read it as well. In this blurb, you get a better sense of the applicant as a person and as a candidate. They even injected industry jargon in a lighthearted way. While some industries are more formal than others, it doesn’t mean you have to be dull and lackluster in your writing. Show some enthusiasm!

I drive by your dealership daily, admiring many of the cars on the lot. When I saw your opening for a mechanic on Craig’s list, I knew it was a great opportunity for a car buff and experienced mechanic like myself. I’m looking to join a bigger organization where I can work on a wider variety of vehicles.
As the resident ‘grease monkey’ at the small shop where I work now, I’ve risen in the ranks to head Automotive Technician. I’ve always been fascinated with taking things apart and putting them back together again. I modified my first mini bike when I was 16 years old, and have been obsessed with mechanics and car/motorcycle repair ever since then.

3) Little things count
File names matter. Make it easy for the employer. Save your documents using your first and last name and what they are. For example:

JohnJobseekerResume
JohnJobseekerCoverLetter

In addition, never overlook an opportunity to promote yourself. If you’re emailing documents, use the subject line to your advantage.
receptionist

Be bold and confident in your job search. These tips/tactics may be small things, but they can help set you apart. Will an employer hire you just because you used a catchy subject line or saved a file in a certain way? Probably not. BUT, using a combination of these ideas, being proactive and actively setting yourself apart can make a difference. If what you’re doing isn’t working, give these tips a try. We would love to know any job search hacks/ideas that worked for you, so feel free to leave those in the comments.

Thanks for reading!

Erin Pummell, Operations Recruiter

ErinPWhat do you do in your position?   I am an Operations Recruiter for Oldcastle Lawn and Garden. I review applicants who apply for the hourly production roles, phone screen qualified candidates, and send candidates who would be a great fit for the role and for Oldcastle over to the hiring managers to go through the next steps in our process. I also post jobs and source for hard-to-fill roles when there is time.

When did you join Oldcastle? May 2017

Where is your job located? Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here? I love the team atmosphere and how helpful everyone is! I felt 100% at home after my first day because everyone I met was so kind, helpful and caring!

What are the best parts of your job? I really enjoy searching for candidates and learning their stories. I love helping to find talented individuals to contribute to our company’s awesome culture.

What would co-workers say about you? I hope they would say that I am helpful and that I contribute to the team!

What was your first job ever? I was a data entry clerk at my parents’ corporation in Georgia.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories? When I was a student ambassador at my college, we usually worked evenings calling prospective students. I found a button under the desk I was sitting at, and spent several minutes repeatedly pushing it. Then, all of a sudden, a campus police officer rushed into the building and asked what the emergency was. We were all so confused. It turns out that the button I was playing with was the panic button in the building!

Would you like to share anything about your family? I grew up in Georgia with my parents and my two sisters. My younger sister and my mom currently live in New York, about two hours away from Rochester. My older sister still lives in Georgia. I also have a husband, Sean, and two fur babies, Christabella and Ella. We all love to spend time together, hosting family parties or just hanging out!

Jason Herrman, Engineering Manager

jhWhat division do you work for?
Oldcastle Precast

What do you do in your position?
I get to help our company succeed. I work on a variety of large-scale projects and projects that have national products in them, while my team handles the engineering and drafting.  I am also lucky to help out other locations when they are overwhelmed or need some help to get through a difficult time.

When did you join Oldcastle? January of 2012

Where is your job located?
I am lucky – my job is located in beautiful, sunny Colorado!  I have the privilege of working on projects located all over the country.

Can you describe your career progression here?
I started as an EIT (Engineer in Training) after getting my masters.  As an EIT, I helped out doing designs for some of our locations. I started getting involved in product development and worked on several products, which led to helping our sales team with engineering.  While working to support the sales team, my team expanded and our portfolio of work also expanded. We developed more products, and continue to support in any way we can. That is how I got to where I am now.

Christmas 055What do you like about working here?
Great people. Great location. Great company. Oldcastle is a solid company with lots of room for growth. There are endless possibilities within the company and our parent company, CRH. I enjoy the job I do and have a great work/life balance.

What are the best parts of your job?
I get to be involved in really unique and large scale projects. We are challenged to come up with new ideas and new ways of turning a cast-in-place concrete design to a precast concrete design. This often requires critical thinking and can be quite a challenge.

Have you worked on any unique, high profile or interesting projects?
Yes. You can see here (above) some photos of a few very complex and large vaults that we designed and produced. I also developed a ballistic wall product line.

What advice would give for an Engineer who wants to work for us? Why should they choose Oldcastle?
Precast Concrete is not boring! It is fun work with lots of responsibility and lots of variety, and it’s founded in a company that treats you well and offers a lot of growth opportunities.

Is there anything else you want to share about yourself?
I lived in Sudan for a couple of years doing non-profit work building a school. It is what led me to study structural engineering and gave me lots of experience with concrete.

Resume Tips From a Recruiter

We recently asked Joel Burris, a Corporate Recruiter for Allied Building Products for his advice on resumes. Joel looks at hundreds of resumes weekly. Check out these two short clips to hear what he has to say.

How long does a recruiter spend looking at a resume?

You want yours to be the first. Yes, there are times they go back to the pile – but who wants to be second place?

Resume tips recap:

  1. Make sure it’s streamlined and flows easily.
  2. Use bullets to keep it organized.
  3. It doesn’t have to be fancy – no need for photos, charts or graphs.
  4. Use a timeline format.
  5. Gaps in your work history? Provide a brief explanation as to why.
  6. Two page resumes are ok. One is fine too. Three is too much.

How can you stand apart from a pool of similar candidates?

How to stand out recap:
1) Show enthusiasm
Be excited about the opportunity and be willing to have an upbeat conversation.
2) Do a little bit of research
Learn about the company and job, including the competitors of the company.
3) Be able to articulate accomplishments at your last job
Tell stories and give examples – don’t just describe duties.

Chris Garrie, VP of Recruiting

ChrisGarrieOldcastleWhat do you do in your position?
I am fortunate to lead the talent acquisition effort for the Oldcastle family of companies across North America.

When did you join Oldcastle?
January 2005

Where is your job located? Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here? There are many reasons why I like working for Oldcastle.  First, it is a very successful global conglomerate in the building material manufacturing/distribution space that is always looking for better ways to do business.  Second, the people (from top to bottom in the organization) are bright, approachable and genuinely care about the company, customers, fellow employees and the community.

Chrisbobduffy

Chris with Rochester Chamber of Commerce President Robert Duffy after a tour of our office this fall

What are the best parts of your job?
I get to work with the best recruiting team in Rochester.  We also help people find a career with a stable, profitable company that values the contributions made by each and every employee.

What would co-workers say about you?
I hope that they would say that I care very much about our team and Oldcastle.

Can you share any funny or interesting work stories from over the years?
When we first started to build out the recruitment effort in Rochester, we were sitting in some unused office space in our warehouse on Buffalo Road.  When we started to add staff to our team, we had to do everything possible to find space – including sitting people in old closets and conference rooms.  Mike Brigida (who ran the warehouse and is now a good friend) was very accommodating and allowed us to basically take over his office.  Since that time, we were fortunate to build a foundation that could apply to all of the Oldcastle companies. This has allowed us to grow this team so significantly over the past 11 years.  We are now in a true office on Scottsville Road,  but that wouldn’t have happened without the help and patience of many in our original building.

What was your first job ever?
I was a dishwasher at the local truck stop in Round Lake, NY

Tell us about your family.
I have been married to my wife Erin for 10 years. We have  two boys Kyle (8) and Ethan (4) and two dogs – Shelby and Ginger.

Do you have any hobbies?
Lately, I spend most of my spare time with my family shuttling my kids back and forth from the YMCA or reading.  I do try to get out for long bike rides when we have good weather.
