DanRWhat do you do in your position?
I post jobs, go through applications, pick out the most qualified candidates and call them. If they seem like someone who can succeed with our company, I send them to the hiring managers to set up in person interviews.

When did you join Oldcastle? May 2017 

Where is your job located? Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here? It’s a great group of people – always willing to help each other. The company also has great benefits and perks.

What are the best parts of your job? Being able to find people a job with a company that they can happily work for until they retire.

What would co-workers say about you? Team player, always willing to listen to advice.  

What was your first job ever? Working at Delta Sonic carwash for about a day when I was 15.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories? I used to work at a movie theater, and we would do a company picnic every summer. One summer, we had extra money for the event, so we rented a dunk tank where employees had the option to attempt to dunk members of the management team. That was also the same summer that I was a Supervisor for the company. Long story short, I did not leave that picnic dry!

Would you like to share anything about your family? My grandparents on my dad’s side came to the United States from Sicily, Italy. So, half of my family speaks fluent Italian, besides me. I can’t understand half the conversations at the dinner table.

A Recipe For Job Search Success

cookieWith a little luck and a dollop of determination, you can cook up a great career for the New Year.

1) What jobs are you going to apply to?
Broaden your search parameters. Check out the  Occupational Outlook Handbook: https://www.bls.gov/ooh/ This site identifies and describes almost every occupation you could imagine. It even includes education required and median pay. Another idea: When you go to the job boards – instead of always typing in the same job title – look for other titles. In addition, keep an open mind when you see the suggested jobs LinkedIn shows in your feed. There could be jobs out there that you’re qualified for that you hadn’t even thought of previously. Oh, and this same tip applies on the baking front too. Are you going to make cookies this year? Or maybe it’s pie? Sure, make those old favorites – but give new treats a try too!

2) Stir in two cups of patience
Any good baker knows that you can’t open the oven door when cookies or cakes are baking. It can be tempting to sneak a peek or poke at those cupcakes. However, the wait is worth the while. The same thing holds true for your job search. This is particularly true in December. Job search activity on all fronts slows to what seems like a crawl. You have to rise above the impatience and know that things will pick up again. January is just around the corner. Always keep your eyes open for positions, keep applying and be prepared for more activity in early 2017.

cupcakes3) Sprinkle in a pinch of creativity
Don’t be a cookie cutter candidate! On your end, what else you can do to differentiate yourself? Can you start a blog in your field? Is there a new networking group or conference you can attend? You want to stand out! While you do need to follow the rules when it comes to submitting applications, you can think and act outside the box too. Is the recruiter for the role on Twitter? Does the company have a careers Facebook page? There are other less obvious ways to reach out and differentiate yourself. For you bakers out there – we all know that the best recipes aren’t 100% by the book. You follow the directions to a point, but then add in your own special seasonings or alter the original. The results? Delish! Put that same strategy in play when you’re on the prowl for a position.

4) Don’t forget to add a dash of of love
You can always tell when a recipe has been made with love. The baker is passionate and excited about what they’re creating. Have you lost that excitement? It can be a challenge to maintain enthusiasm – especially for a job search that seems to be never ending. But, you have to find that inner strength to tap back into a better frame of mind. Interviewers (in person or on the phone) can tell when you’re just going through the motions. Even if you have to “fake it ’til you make it,” you need to do just that. Smile, think about the satisfaction of landing that job and what it will feel like to start a new adventure.

Brendan Sheehan, Corporate Recruiter

BrendanSWhat do you do in your position at the recruiting office? I am the corporate recruiter for our Architectural Products Group (APG). I work on the exempt level positions for seven of our regional companies in both the U.S. and Canada. I support the western region, as well as the northeast and Texas.

When did you join Oldcastle?
I started with Oldcastle in January of 2015.

Where is your job located?
All of the recruiting efforts for Oldcastle in North America are centralized in our offices in Rochester, NY.

What are the best parts of your job?
The people in the organization.  Even though we are the largest building materials manufacturer in North America, the company has a very blue collar feel to it. The management, from the regional presidents, to the local sales and operations managers, are all very accessible and very open. The needs for each Oldcastle company and region can vary, so having that open communication with numerous levels within the organization is a huge asset for us in the recruiting center.

What do you like about working here?
Getting to know the hiring managers and really being able to get a feel for their local needs. Like I mentioned, Oldcastle has a great culture of openness and working together for the greater good of the company. I love being able to get a real understanding of what we are trying to accomplish, both in business and as a leader in the building materials industry.

How would coworkers describe you?  Hopefully they would say that I’m a hardworking, fun-loving guy and team player. I try to bring a positive attitude into the work place.

What was your first job ever?
My first job was working at Silver Stadium where the Rochester Red Wings play. I worked the grill that was on a deck down the 3rd base line. It was right next to the visiting team’s bullpen, so I would talk with the players while I was setting up for the game.

Do you have any fun or interesting work stories?
We went to the National Sales Meeting in Nashville in 2015. This was at the Gaylord Opryland Resort.  There are nine acres of indoor gardens there, a river flowing through it and waterfalls. It took 15 minutes to walk from one end to the other! It was a great event – especially getting to meet over 200 people on the teams we work with all over the country.

Tell us about your family.
My mom lives in Rochester in the same town as I do, and my brother lives just outside of Philadelphia with his wife, my niece and nephew. He has three books published, and is the food editor for Philadelphia Magazine. We all like to travel, and both my brother and I have lived out west on a couple of occasions.

5 Job Search Resolutions You Can Keep

As we turn the calendar page to a fresh New Year, are you resolving to do better with your diet, exercise plan or finances? Don’t forget about your career! January is a great time to turn over a new leaf – especially if your job search has stalled. These resolutions can get you on the right track in 2016.

1.) Commit to spending more time on job search activities

If you’re unemployed, you should devote at least the equivalent of a regular 40 hour work week to networking, researching  job openings and applying to positions. If you’re employed but looking, commit to 2 hours a week for job searching (all done at home after regular work hours of course!).

2.) Schedule one networking event per month

This could range from going to a business presentation, attending a community business function or participating in a formal networking session. To find out about upcoming networking opportunities, check out business associations in your industry, the local newspaper (regular edition and business) – even your college career center (which can also be a great resource for alumni).

3.) Pick one job search tool to improve every other week

For example, January could be resumes and LinkedIn. Week one would involve an in-depth look at your resume – what’s working and what could use a little sprucing up. Get input from a friend and someone in your field. Week three could be making sure your LinkedIn profile accurately portrays your background. You could also vow to start adding more connections and liking, commenting and posting status updates on a regular basis.

4.)  Incorporate a healthy lifestyle into your job search plan

Eating right, working out, getting adequate sleep and taking time for family and friends should not be separate from your job search. A healthy, rested mind and body will do wonders for your energy and productivity in the job search process.

5) Vow to be more patient this year

It’s easy to want that call for an interview NOW. However, that is not how the job search process works. In particular, when businesses are getting back into the swing of things in the new year, you can’t expect their timetable to equal yours. Just take a deep breath and keep moving forward with steps one through four. Getting yourself worked up and stressed out won’t do you any good. If you find your stress level rising, some good de-stressing ideas include: texting/calling someone, taking a walk,  getting together with friends, going to a movie, watching a sitcom or reading a book/magazine.
