4 Career Resolutions You Can Keep in 2017

2016 to 2017, happy new year conceptWell, here we are again. A fresh slate, a new calendar. Ready to make the most of this year for your career? Great! Let’s get started.

  1. Vow to update your LinkedIn page
Be honest now. When was the last time you updated your LinkedIn profile? Set aside an hour. You want to go through and make additions and deletions as necessary. Have you taken on any new projects? Are there new success stories you could add? Don’t just reiterate your resume! Add “wow factor” content that a recruiter or hiring manager would be impressed to read. LinkedIn allows for photos, video and links too – take advantage of the multimedia possibilities. When you’re done updating, show it to a friend or family member and ask them how it looks, what makes sense, and what could still use some sprucing up. When you’re done with that, you need to do the same thing for your resume.
  2. Start an accomplishment list
It’s easy to forget all the projects you’ve completed over the year. Yet, you can really stand out when you have this arsenal of good stuff to draw from (for your resume, cover letter and interview). If you jot down your successes and projects you’ve worked on as they happen (once a week is a good goal), this will help when it comes time to interview. Start – right now – to keep track of your results. This way you won’t have to back track or try to remember something you worked on months ago. This list can also be helpful for your yearly performance review.
  3. Show your references some love
You do have a list of at least three references that you could use, right? Never underestimate the importance of a good reference. Create your list and then make sure to keep in touch with your references – not just when you need them. In addition, make sure your reference has a copy of your resume and prep them if you think they will be called. At the very least, send them the job description and 2 or 3 points/characteristics you want them to emphasize.
  4. Start a career ‘Content calendar.’
Marketers and writers often schedule out topics and themes by day, week and/or month. This could be based on the season, holidays or a number of other factors related to the industry/field they are working in. You can do the same – whether you’re job searching or just focusing on your career. Break it up by season to get started. What do you hope to accomplish this first quarter? For instance – January through March could be – Resume/Cover letter updating, April though June – networking/submitting applications, July through September – attend an industry conference/seminar, etc.

Don’t stay stuck in a job just because you don’t want to put in the work and effort required for a successful job search. These tips don’t take a lot of time, but can yield good results. Good luck on your career journey in 2017!

5 Fall Job Search Tips Recruiters Want You To Know

Winding road

Are you happy where you’re working now? Or, are you looking for a change? Fall can be a great time to embark on a job search. Our recruiters want to increase your odds of landing that next position.

  1. Think about your timing  – don’t fall into the “I’ll wait until the New Year” trap
Remember how you had high hopes to get a new job back in January? It’s admirable, but life has a way of getting in the way and those promises fall by the wayside. Why not get started now – and avoid the added competition that will inevitably be starting their search in 2017?
  2. Pay close attention to the job description
The details in a job description are there for a reason.

“If you don’t have a majority of the specific qualifications, it’s better to bypass that particular job. Employers are seeking specific skill sets. Can you do at least 80% of the items outlined in the job ad? If not, skip applying – your odds of even making it to the phone screen are low – other better qualified candidates will be the ones chosen. Your time would be better spent looking for an opening that is more closely aligned with your background and experience.”

  3. Don’t apply to numerous jobs within the same company

You don’t want to give the impression that you’re randomly applying for just anything. You never want to appear desperate. Be thoughtful and selective.  Search for and target only those jobs that you are truly a match for, says Corporate Recruiter Brendan Sheehan

  4. Craft a 30, 60 and 90 day plan
Map out the job search activities for the remainder of the year. It takes time to get a job, but there are proactive steps you can schedule to get there. Set up target dates for revamping your resume, searching for/applying for positions and networking. Start the schedule now – and you’ll earn yourself a break around holiday time.

Be open to making contacts and networking everywhere you go – and not just at formal networking events either, says John McCue, Staffing Manager. You never know who the people you encounter might know. Their connections could help you land your next job.

  5. Have your success stories ready
Now is not the time to be humble! Be prepared to brand yourself and talk about your accomplishments.

Recruiters want to know how you made a difference where you worked. The more you can quantify and amplify your accomplishments, the more edge you’ll have over other applicants. You need to be able to articulate this in your resume, during that initial phone screen, at the interview and the follow up.”

With children being back in school and summer vacations just a distant memory, you’re more apt to be able to connect with recruiters and employers during the Fall. Prep accordingly, and you could be well on your way to landing a position before we ring in the New Year!

Jennifer Friday, Staffing Administrator

IMG_3132What do you do in your position?
I am a Staffing Administrator in the recruiting office. I assist the recruiters by sending out offer packets, reviewing background and drug screening results, and making sure that the candidate has completed all the paperwork that is necessary before they start in their new position at Oldcastle. I also help candidates with any questions they have about the new hire  process.

When did you join Oldcastle?
December 2015

Where is your job located?
The recruiting office in Rochester, NY

What do you like about working here?
I like working here because I like being able to help candidates. There is a time frame of about one to two weeks where I am able to communicate with the candidate and get to know them. It is always wonderful to have someone call and tell you that a recruiter you are working with is great, that our office is very responsive,  and how excited they are to start.  Being able to answer questions and talk to the candidates can help diminish the anxiety of starting a new job. There have even been a few times when candidates have emailed me after their first day just to tell me how well it went.

What are the best parts of your job?
The best part is the people that I work with every day. Everyone is so nice, helpful, and approachable.

What would co-workers say about you?
They would say that I am the lady that sits at the new front desk that had been empty for awhile, that I still startle them when they come in. But besides that, I think they would say that I am quiet, helpful and friendly.

Tell us about your family.
My wonderful husband, Rick, and I have been together since we were eighteen. We like to travel, go to sporting events, and go to concerts. We have two beautiful daughters, Fiona (11) and Naomi (5). This year, Fiona started sixth grade in the Middle School. She loves to play soccer, participates in Odyssey of the Mind (an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students), plays trombone, and was selected to sing with the All County Choir. She has accomplished so much, is on high honor roll, and we are very proud of her. Naomi started kindergarten this year, which was very tough on me, but she absolutely loves it. She also plays soccer and does really well in school. We are so proud of her, and love her nonstop sense of humor. Our family also consists of three cats, one dog, and two fish.

What was your first job ever?
The first job that I had was cleaning the Allied offices just down the road. I would work from 7 am to 11 am every Saturday sweeping, vacuuming and mopping. It was pretty easy, but waking up early on a Saturday as a teenager was not my favorite thing to do!

Making It Easier For Veterans To Find Jobs

milVeterans bring a variety of desirable skills and qualifications to the workplace, including dedication, loyalty and commitment to get the job done. Despite this, it can be a challenge for them to find civilian jobs because many job descriptions are written in a way that does not correlate to a veteran’s job title.

“Most job search sites don’t take into consideration military job titles, sub-specialties and specialized training, leaving veterans with a more complicated, lengthy job search, says Chris Garrie, VP of Recruiting for Oldcastle.

Like many employers, Oldcastle wanted to hire more veterans, and wanted a way to make the job search easier for them. So, they decided to team up with Monster.com and Military.com to create a Military Skills Translator (MST).

What is a MST?
Simply put, a Military Skills Translator is an online tool that veterans can use to search for jobs by choosing from a drop down menu that lists their service, pay grade and military job title. Results from the search include jobs that may be a match for the veteran, including some that the veteran may not have previously even thought of.

MSTscreen

According to Joel Burris, a US army veteran who works as a Corporate Recruiter for Allied Building Products, “This is a great tool that I wish existed when I was job searching.  I liked being able to add my specific training and immediately see what roles were a match. It’s a great starting off point.”

If you’re looking for companies that have Military Skills Translators, a good place to start is Military.com.  Veteran friendly companies there are actively seeking veterans for employment. In addition, you will find job search advice and resources on that site, as well as on some of the company pages.
